Title PIRATE - ECVET Earthbuilding Europe - Provide Instructions and Resources for Assessment and Training in Earth building
Project Number 528117-LLP-1-2012-1-FR-LEONARDO-LMP
Project Type Development of Innovation
Country EU-Centralised Projects
EARTH - the most creative, universal building material for sustainable architecture, building and decoration.
ECVET - a tool to create resources for training to support two growing business sectors: eco-construction and retrofitting for environmental and energy requirements.
PIRATE - a project to develop a complete ECVET for earth building!
Our units of learning outcomes, vehicles of new standards of competence needed by a growing market, will:
• empower professionals, offer modular qualification, encourage employment opportunities and mobility, further skills training to help job search;
• guide teachers when defining new content and assessment procedures, judging learners performance;
• be a tool for certifying bodies when reviewing or creating qualifications, looking for transnational compatibility .
Most PIRATE partners have contributed to other European funded projects with an earth building emphasis. The PIRATE workgroups will create links, share experience and accumulate results.
This project contributes to address the constantly rising social demand for improving the ecological and energy balance in the construction sector. Its aim is to favour an increase of the number of workers and supervisors qualified in natural and healthy building materials, more specifically earth building materials and techniques, both for new construction and rehabilitation of heritage buildings.
The objective is to establish favourable conditions for an increase of the training opportunities (Level 3 to 6) for the use of earth building materials and techniques, including flexible routes for lifelong learning (mobility, transfer, validation processes).
To achieve this, the project will act towards the standardisation of the certification of the learning outcomes in earth building, in a system recognised across Europe. This will be done following the recommendations of the European parliament and council (ECVET, ECTS, EQF), through creating a full range of learning outcomes in a comparative and transparent manner, and favouring the possibilities for international mobility and lifelong learning opportunities for learners and practitioners.
The project will allow enhancing European wide exchange and inter-professional dialogue on earth building skills, modern and innovative techniques among training providers.
Consortium partners will also take the opportunity of the project to learn about and compare typical building technologies, norms and standards, and trades and crafts of different countries. That will also contribute to the re-appropriation of vernacular construction methods and materials. This can induce a recovery of autonomy, self capacity to develop competence, and also pleasure and creativity in the professional development.
The project will associate 3 parallel development stages to implement ECVET
- Experiment procedures for integration of units of new learning outcomes into existing qualifications, in collaboration with competent institutions.
- Design new learning outcomes and test procedures for their assessment in national context and their transfer in mobility context, with credit award.
- Develop concepts to combine ECVET and ECTS.
The issues will be translated into operational and quality recommendations.

Product information The main product will be a matrix of ECVET units of learning outcomes for EQF levels 3 and 4, with criteria of assessment, in the main earth building load bearing wall techniques : rammed earth, cob, earth brick masonry (compressed bloc or adobe).
