Title PIRI REIS: Network, Collaboration and Development for Geographers
Project Number 2011-1-TR1-LEO05-28023
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
We believe that graduate training in geography is not at the desired quality, networking among geographers is not at a sufficient level, and collaboration opportunities for professional geographers are limited. So in Piri Reis project, we want to improve networking opportunities among geographers, develop an academic culture and platform for collaboration, and develop academic competencies and skills among professional geographers by organizing
workshops, conferences, academic meetings, launching online journals, founding
a new geographical association, and publishing books in the area of research and
training in geography.
VET system for the education and training of geography academics lacks of basic competencies. This is reflected in the number of the quality of the work produced and citation rates in international indexes such as SSCI. One of the main reasons for this is the problem in the vocational educational training (VET) system in geography programs. Geographers trained without sufficient VET skills such as basic research method courses have difficulties in training their fellow students, producing quality publications and involving international collaboration. Also, professional geographers in their vocational educational training in the course of their career lack network opportunities and platforms. There is no institution to provide services organizing regular conferences, meetings and publishing academic journals.
The Project, PIRI REIS, aims to 1) provide training for geography academics in the areas where they lack skills and knowledge. PIRI REIS will also organize workshops for developing a basic competencies for professional geographers. 2) It will establish a geographical association for networking among geographers. A journal will be formed to create a platform for the presentation of research and collaboration. It will be the first online geographical journal with free access of all parties interested.
Description PIRI REIS is expected to have impact the nature of VET for geography academics in terms of research skills and competencies. The project will have an impact the in reformation of graduate programs under dramatic changes with Bologna Process. Finally, we envisage that after the completion of PIRI REIS, there will be more network, collaboration and internationalization among geography academics.
