Among the activities presented in the seven subsectors of the metals production, the EU-27’s forging, metal coating and mechanical engineering sector is one of the largest composed by 158000 enterprises providing employment for 1,4 million persons (Eurostat 2006). Challenges faced by this EU’s sector therefore have direct and indirect consequences on many other economy’s parts. A Communication (COM(2008) 108) from the EU Commission to the Council and the European Parliament on the competitiveness of the metals industries was adopted in February 2008. The reduction of the energy and materials consumption and the modernization of the production processes by using new technologies were highlighted as challenges to be faced.
The main reason for developing this project was to meet the need to acquire new competencies of the present and future workforce of forging sector industries to face the optimization of forge processes by introducing simulation technologies based on FEM (Numerical Analysis by Finite Elements). The foreseen impact was the creation of a new vocational continuous training offer, recognized by a new Professional Certificate of Specialists in FEM Analysis and Design of Forging Process, providing to forging industries specialists to face the implementation of this technologies and expecting it will encourage them to create new jobs with high technological added value.
FEM FORGING’s aim was to design, develop and validate a catalog of competences, an educational program and didactical materials and resources to deliver both e-learning and face to face continuous training on Simulation Technologies based on Numerical Analysis of Finite Elements (FEM) applied to Hot, Warm and Cold Forging Processes. Expected end users were both actual and future workers of the industries forging’s sector (technicians and/or engineers), VET Students of Second Cycle of Mechanical Manufacturing Branch and Students of Industrial Engineering willing to become FEM Forging Specialists. According that, 3 courses – basic, intermediate and advanced – were produced. A research on needed competencies involving at least 100 forging industries and 5 national associations, who participated too providing industrial cases studies, validating by tests of evaluation and providing trainees for 6 pilot training experiences, 2 in e-learning delivery. Dissemination activities involved forging enterprises and were supported by corporate instruments of their national associations.
EASIT2 and MAIATZ SIMULFORM projects based the transfer. Partners of both participated in the partnership, very specialized in FEM, forging and educational activities, composed by 3 University Engineering Research Centres (DK, IT,TR), the International Association for the Engineering Analysis (UK), a VET Innovation Centre and a VET Educational Centre specialized in Mechanical Manufacturing Training. All of them have close relationship with forging sector and great dissemination capacity.
