Talent 4... is a workshop programme to help participants identify their innate talents and skills. Developed initially for use with young and adult prisoners in the UK, this project has created a European version of T4... (T4E) that is culturally specific and is suitable for participants from all
T4E uses a strengths-based approach to raise participants awareness of their talents and skills with a view to helping them make better and more informed judgements about future training and/or employment goals.
The project allowed partners to make adaptations to the materials used in the programme to suit specific contexts, and the programme was successfully piloted through a series of six workshops with beneficiaries in each partner state.
Partners contributed to the dissemination of the results of the project and helped in the exploitation of the product in their own and other EU states.
This transnational project emerged from Rideout's existing work in prisons with men and women who were unclear about their own talents or possible career direction. This issue has major implications for the high re-offending rate in the UK and shared concerns across Europe. So in 2009 Rideout developed a programme entitled Talent 4..
Talent 4 [T4] is a diagnostic system with the objective of assisting learners to define personal talents and therefore identification of career paths. T4 is an accessible programme and accompanying resource kit containing games, exercises, educational films, tasks, and specially designed software. In summary, the outputs of the programme as diagnostic assessments of the participants' skills, interests and potentials are submitted to software which generates proposals as to particular professional sectors for which those individuals are naturally suited and in which they are likely to progress well, given favourable market conditions.
The aim of this TOI project, through work with partners in respect of their expertise, was to make and test adaptations of the existing T4 programme to meet the particular needs of a number of national contexts.
Our consortium had 8 organisations, spanning 6 European nations, enabling diverse expertise that satisfied the different work packages in our work programme.

Tangible outcomes: 44 'Talent 4' Workshops over 6 partner nations (each partner delivered a minimum of 3 adapted workshops before the mid-point review and a further minimum of 3 by end of May 2014). The duration of each workshop was normally 3 days, and a total of 234 target group beneficiaries, spread across Europe, were reached. External evaluation of pre and post workshop data indicates a statistically significant impact on raising of personal aspirations as a result of doing the workshop. As a result of the success of the pilot programmes the workshop was adapted and accepted for accreditation by the Romanian Penitentiaries Authority and had been approved for use through the Romanian prison system.
Intangible outcomes: training of staff in competence diagnosis and learning strengths analysis; wider dissemination of the training in the nations of our partners through their extensive networks; future contributions to both offender rehabilitation and the reduction of re-offending agenda, shared in Europe.
In future, the prime impact will be on the target group beneficiaries, prisoners and ex-offenders, but also young adult groups who would benefit from vocational guidance. In turn it is anticipated that this will deliver, more broadly, positive impact for families of both prisoners and victims, communities and tax-payers in respect of reduced re-offending.
