Handbook 1 consists of ten chapters and two annexes.
Handbook is presented in an understandable way supported with many examples. However many references are provided for background material and further study.
Description Chapter 1 gives a brief overview of the basic concepts used in the assessment of existing structures. Chapter 2 summarizes current applicable standards, codes and recommendations related to existing structures. Chapter 3 reviews the requirements on performance for structural members and for the global structure compatible to the current provisions of the Eurocodes. Chapter 4 describes the assessment process emphasizing on the different phases depending on the state of knowledge; basic aspects as inspection and maintenance are defined in this chapter. The structural reanalysis methods such as static, dynamic or fatigue analysis are discussed in Chapter 5. Probabilistic analysis methods are extensively described in Chapter 6 and several examples are thereby provided. Reliability updating based on additional information is a basic issue in the assessment of an existing structure. Modern methodologies how to update the reliability of an existing structure are thoroughly discussed in Chapter 7. Thereby several examples are reported. Chapter 8 describes methodological aspects with respect to proof loading. Chapter 9 discusses modern risk and reliability acceptance criteria and recommends how to use them in case of existing structures. Finally Chapter 9 addresses the important topic of cost optimisation during the residual lifetime of the structure. Annex A gives the basic definitions (terminology) used herein and Annex B a summary of Bayesian techniques widely used in the updating procedure.
