HTL Rankweil and the LdV Mobility Programme
Our school has been cooperating with the European Union for several years now, sending students abroad for work practices on a yearly basis.
HTL Rankweil is a technical college specialising in civil engineering and electronics. Pupils of a technical college in Austria are obliged to complete practical training over a period of at least 8 weeks within their 5 years of education. This practical training must be done in engineering companies. Before participation in the Sokrates-Leonardo programme, this was done mainly in firms in Vorarlberg and the neighbouring countries.
Many of these firms have branches in English speaking countries. In 2006 we contacted these firms in order to find work placements in England. For summer 2012 we have been successful in securing internships for students at Tridonic (Spennymoor, Co. Durham), Hilti (Glasgow) and Liebherr (Sunderland), each company offering placements for two students.
All 6 students worked in Britain for a period of 6 weeks. The type of work which they carried out complies with the regulations and requirements of a technical college in Austria. This means they are required to meet the demands of covering practical experiences in addition to their theoretical and practical education at school (dual educational system).
This practical training abroad contributed to promoting both practical experiences at the place of work and language improvement. In addition, the students gained a lot on a personal and social level.
