Title FormaLab - a FabLab for developing transversal and key skills
Project Number 2011-1-FR1-LEO05-24454
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Marketing Text FormaLab is an open and innovative method to train young adults in order to develop key skills and transversal skills. It is based on the Fablab concept and targets mainly young adults facing difficulties. The informality, the need for creativity, the friendly character of the place and the concrete dimension of the activities undertaken strengthens participants' motivation to learn. Thanks to FormaLab new interests and skills are detected. It gives ideas for choosing a vocational orientation towards technical jobs.
Summary FormaLab has implemented a training method based on the fabrication of objects. It is inspired by the principle of FabLabs and it is included in the network. The key strength of Formalab is to develop key transferable skills among young adults looking for employment. FormaLab is a physical place open to learners through workshops to produce objects. The informal dimension and autonomy given to learners enhances their motivation and their desire to learn. Personal and group projects can be implemented and exchange with other groups are encouraged. Learning and sharing are the core of FormaLab. Our partners, ITD and timelab in Ghent have also developed this formative dimension and have reached new targets (pupils and students, teachers and trainers, young dessocialised). They have benefited from the expertise of Greta du Velay regarding formal training and the development of key competences.
During the project the Greta du Velay has implemented a FormaLab in its training premises by creating a new physical space. A place has been selected and equipped with tools and working stations in order to use digital machines. With the help of Timelab and ITD, workshops have been implemented (construction, parametring and use of a small digital milling machine, construction of Lego robots, construction of a lamp of variable intensity) and integrated in various training schemes. They are used to develop a range of key skills and transversal skills. They are documented in various formats (guidelines + video + photos) so that they can be replicated in other training centers or in fablabs.
Workshops have been created by Timelab with the objective to reach the education world. ITD has impulsed the development of a digital fabrication site in a social centre from Barcelona. Partners have consigned their experience in a practical guide to implement a FormaLab.
Young adults who attended the workshops have acquired a set of key skills they are able to assess and develop (and partners have experimented methods to evaluate them). In each country events have been organised to communicate about this training method that is also being disseminated through the web site under Creative Commons.

Product information The main product is a guide to implement a FormaLab in a training center or in a FabLab. Formalab also provides four examples of workshops with a formative dimension and tools that can be used to assess competences. Several videos showing the concrete activities done in the Formalab and testimonies of learners and trainers have beed edited. After the project, the web site is continuing its own life with new activities. All the products and traces of experience developed within the projects are maintained and disseminated..
