Description Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of high interest as a material for micro- and nanoelectronics device applications ranging from their use as nanowires with either metallic or semiconducting properties, as cold electron emitters, or as electrode materials in sensors. This module gives an introduction to the structure and properties of CNTs, their synthesis methods and examples of CNT application as field emitting electrode for electronic and lightening devices, as well as their application as biomedical sensors. The physical principles are explained as well as the technical and engineering aspects for these applications, enabling the learner to be prepared for starting efficient practical laboratory work in this field of CNT applications.
Target group Technicians or engineers already working in microelectronics and expecting to extend their skills
Result For a CNT application as cold cathode, able to manage and start working on an experimental set-up for prototype device fabrication (e.g. at HEIG-VD). For CNT composite electrode applications, able to manage and characterise a prototype device for biosensors (e.g. at POLITO).
Area of application
Deduce the electronic properties from the CNT chirality.
Estimate field emission currents. Chose and describe CNT growth method.
