Title Animated Learning
Project Number LLP-LdV-ToI-2009/DK-901
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Development and Implementation of self-training Computer-assisted Animation Program and a guide book as an Innovative Didactic Tool for teachers in the elementary School System
The project intends to contribute to raising literacy among primary and secondary school children. The objective of "Animated Learning" is to help children and young people acquire the basic life-skills and competences necessary for
their personal and educational development, for future employment and for active European citizenship. Since 2000, a number of surveys have shown that a European average of 17.2% of the 15 year-olds are low performers in reading literacy. The reading educators in special education classes in primary and secondary schools are the key factor that can turn this situation around.
• To develop an online vocational training tutorial for reading education teachers
• Reading education teachers in primary and secondary schools
• Centres for further training of teachers
• The curriculum and learning materials will be modular, portable and
easily adaptable for different levels and different target groups.
Animated Learning transfers innovative results from animation pedagogies to reading education and pedagogies. The project will develop an online vocational training tutorial for reading education teachers in primary and secondary school. It will be an online userfriendly and low-cost self-instructive training manual in how to start teaching with animation.
Animated Learning will provide teachers with a pedagogic tool, which is based on innovations in computer animation and animated pedagogies. The teachers will be able to use tools for working with children's literacy through animation, computer interaction and play.
In recent years, computer animation has grown to an increasingly widespread and popular media. It is used in movies, videos and computer games and, therefore, it is extremely popular among children and young people. Recently, animation is being used in advertisement, inter-cultural communication and education. In the near future, animated image sequences will constitute a growing part of the visual
communication. This means that animation should no longer be seen as a narrow motion picture technique, but as an effective language.
The project will test the potential of animation pedagogies on developing the literacy of children. The tutorial will be tested on special education teachers and children with dyslexia. It will be developed, tested and disseminated by a partnership of European organizations with expert and best practice knowledge in computer animation, e-Iearning, reading pedagogies.
