Title Use of Simulation: An Educational Strategy to Develop Clinically Competent Nurses
Project Number 2010-1-TR1-LEO05-16726
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Educating nurses to provide competent care in today’s health care environment is becoming increasingly difficult and challenging. Besides, novice nurses must be better prepared to meet the demands of caring for complex patients in complex care environments. Traditional teaching methods emphasize linear thinking; a single concept is taught at a time. But simulation is a method of teaching that allows or requires learners to apply theory to practice in an integrated manner. This project focuses on the use of simulation in nursing education as a teaching and learning approach to improve the quality of instruction in nursing education.
The main aims of this project are to transfer innovative practices in simulation-based training, improve vocational methodologies, and to improve collaboration and transfer of knowledge, experience and technology between EU Member States.
The “Use of Simulation: An Educational Strategy to Develop Clinically Competent Nurses- US:ESDCCN” project aims at facilitating the transfer of a scenario-based simulation training experience in nursing education, providing a safe experiential learning environment. This project includes 7 partners from 3 different countries including Turkey, England and Italy. The project is divided into 7 work packages (WP).
The project duration is 24 months. At the end of the project, it is expected that we will be able to recommend best practices and competency for nurse educators in the use of the scenario-based patient simulation training, particularly as it applies to the acquisition of new clinical skills for the novice practitioner. This enhanced educational approach is expected to improve patient safety in today's health care environment, particularly in countries where the use of the scenario-based patient simulation is currently underdeveloped.
Description Main task of the project is the transfer of scenario based simulation from innovator institution to develop clinically competent nurses. of 7 work packages. The project focuses on the care of trauma patients. This transfer of innovation project - US:ESDCCN consists WP1 includes the dissemination of the project's results. WP2 includes regulation of the project management. WP3 includes the development of the evaluation tools used to evaluate the impact of the innovative practice within the coordinating partner's institution. WP4 includes development of an equipment list required to set up a simulation laboratory and test the implementation of the scenario-based simulation sessions with nursing students. WP5 includes implementation of simulation training and debriefing sessions with two groups of students WP6 includes evaluations of the use of simulation in nursing education by the students involved and the newly trained instructors and WP7 includes analysis of the results.

Product information The outcomes and products of the US:ESDCCN project are the following: Simulation laboratory is main outcome of this project. It can be used for educating nursing students and nurses who work at hospitals. Furthermore, simulation laboratory will be a model for other nursing schools in Turkey. The other important outcome of this project is trauma cases. The cases can be used to identify nursing students’ educational needs. The cases also can be used to measure knowledge of nursing students’ about trauma patient care. Four trauma scenarios for simulation sessions is another outcome of this project. These scenarios can be used during simulation sessions and can be an example to prepare future simulation sessions. The Student Satisfaction will be developed to evaluate students’ satisfaction with the simulation experience. Also Self-Confidence Scale will be developed to evaluate students’ confidence in caring trauma patients. A website and intranet are other outcomes of this project to share information about the project and to disseminate the project results.
