This study defines the vocational education and training (VET) curriculum of the PE-ABLE e-learning course on participatory ergonomics. The course is designed to teach professionals wanting to improve their knowledge and practice in the domain of participatory ergonomics. The course can either be followed in a non-formal training environment, or be part of a formal academic training. For the latter, two European Qualification Framework (EQF) levels have been defines: EQF level 5, the basic PE-ABLE course of 70 hours, and EQF level 6 advanced course of 120 hours.
The study defines learning objectives, as well as its course structure. Students who follow, and finish the course successfully will understand ergonomic hazards in workplaces and will, according to participatory ergonomic principles, introduce effective preventive measures to reduce exposure to these hazards. The course structure consists of five modules, addressing backgrounds of ergonomics, all aspects of participatory ergonomics, and major factors influencing the success and effectiveness of interventions resulting from this approach.
The basic element of the course is the session. Modules are divided into these sessions, ranging from five to nine sessions per module. Four of the five modules are knowledge sessions, leading to competencies, either basic (EQF level 5), or extended EQF level 6). The last module is focused on practical applications to test competencies acquired in modules. For the basic course (EQF level 5) the module will be organized in a simulated environment. The advanced course (EQF level 6) will require the development of a participatory ergonomics program in a company.
