Marketing Text ParentsMatter uses innovative methods developed in Modena, Italy to try and improve effectiveness of vocational education and training. The objective is to reduce drop out rates by involving parents more in the education of their children.
ParentsMatter addresses the problem of early school leaving, particularly by students from migrant families. This is an important pan-European issue: within some communities up to 20% of young people drop out as a result of choosing inappropriate courses, weak careers advice & poor parental support. Parents do matter; they are critically involved in deciding their children’s career paths. But migrant parents, especially, often lack not only knowledge of the education & training system but also the labour market.
New skills required for new jobs are very often ignored with the result that traditional pathways are chosen & benefits to the individual, the institution & the labour market are more likely to be lost.
This project aims to redress this by enhancing the measures that support young people, retaining them within suitable programmes & leading them to achieve new skills for new jobs.
By developing & transferring innovations from Italy, which have markedly raised parent participation, the project will engage parents & professionals in activities to enhance their ability to support students into appropriate career paths. The project will produce methods & measures to strengthen the dynamic between parents & careers advisers, training institutions & the local labour market. It will explore how relationships between migrant associations & VET systems can best be enhanced in order to ensure up to date labour market intelligence & support are provided to young people at the right time.
Coordinated by ROC Midden Nederland, a college with extensive expertise in transnational project management, the consortium consists of 7 colleges from 6 countries, all with experience of international projects & migrant students. Each college has involved a migrant association as a junior project partner. The project will call upon the marketing team from the lead college to direct dissemination & exploitation activities & involve an experienced adviser for the management of quality & evaluation.
The project will impact primarily on parents and career advisers & their increased involvement in guiding students towards new skills & new jobs with better knowledge & understanding of training systems & the labour market.
Description Training materials, to include successful methods and measures of working with parents and advisers, will be developed & tested by each partner. The project will also highlight how by working sensitively with parents appropriate interventions can significantly improve retention and achievement even within hard to reach groups. The testing process will demonstrate measurable outcomes: increased participation & confidence of parents in school/college life; better informed choices by students; increased retention rates; & new partnerships formed with the local labour market & community groups. The project materials will be made widely available to other schools & colleges through the channels forged by the valorization strategies.
