The name S-Cube represents the three S's associated with this project, namely: Soft Skills for Social enterprises.
The overall aim of the S-Cube project was to spread the use of on-line role play for providing a training experience to enhance the soft skills of individuals working within social enterprise settings. This is being achieved by adapting & transferring an existing 3D open source graphic multiplayer platform (EUTOPIA), & the products of a previous TOI Leonardo Project (EUTOPIA-MT) to the new setting of social enterprises.
Social enterprises have dual purposes of producing a profit to achieve organisational sustainability & fulfilling a social mission. Their activities often benefit groups of people who are disadvantaged, including the unemployed, ethnic minorities & people with disabilities. Existing research shows that social enterprises face a number of operating challenges, & in order for them to compete, upskilling of their staff may be necessary. They are often small & working under condition of resources scarcity. This can preclude them from developing or gaining access to educational & training expertise. Many such enterprises could benefit from additional support in the development of skills critical to their success. 'Soft skills' are particularly important, & are related to the way that people interact with others, how they understand their social environment, & how they manage relationships & address problems. In line with the results of a substantive pan-European training needs analysis, an on-line multi-player role-play training scenario has been created to focus on the development of soft skills in the areas of communication, influencing, ability to convince & understanding relationships for individuals working in social enterprises.
This project has developed a learning programme tailored for social enterprises soft skill training needs by using educational role play simulation gaming. This project has delivered a number of tangible & intangible outcomes allowing the exploitation of both the VET product & supporting methodology by social enterprises & other small to medium & not-for-profit organisations within the EU.
The S-cube project has transfered & adapted the existing EUTOPIA 3D graphic e-learning platform, as developed by the Relational Sciences Department at the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA), & the training products & methodology of EUTOPIA-MT, a previous TOI Leonardo Project, to the new setting of social enterprises.
EUTOPIA is an open source 3D graphic tool for communication modelling based on Educational Multiplayer On-Line Role Playing Games (EMORPG). This software allows trainers to design personalised training scenarios & conduct experience-based learning activities through multi-player role-playing games remotely. The training methodology exploits this technology so as to enable a small community of participants to communicate, interact, & practice different styles of communication in various contexts.
The S-Cube project has extending the application of the EUTOPIA role-playing software to social enterprise settings. The existing EUTOPIA manuals & trainers' kit have been adapted to fit the delivery of training with social enterprise target groups. The trialling of the product took place in the UK, Ireland & Germany. O-line role play scenarios hat many social entrepreneurs recognise were esigned that incorporatedthe development of soft skills. The scenarios were played & evaluated by social entrepreneur stakeholders in the three countries with this user feedback being captured & used to further enhance the training product & associated scenario, so that a final self-contained training product could be shared with the European social enterprise community that allows additional training scenarios to be developed to fit different soft skill requirements.
The extent of the dissemination was critical to the success of this project, with the project itself acting as a vehicle for dissemination. Dissemination was on-going, with papers presented at international conferences, white papers and a journal paper written on pan-European social entrepreneur soft skill needs, an e-book to outline the learning programme development & application, & the promotion & demonstration of the S-cube training concept at various entrepreneurship exhibitions & events.
This project particularly targeted the European Priorities for TOI concerned with promoting the acquisition of key competencies in VET. To fulfil this target, the end users in this pilot project were engaged in identifying skills needs that have led to the generation & development of a relevant online soft skill scenarios. These training participants have acted as ambassadors for the VET product, thus furthering the diffusion & dissemination of the approach.
