Marketing Text This project provides the opportunity to become trained in the sxciting field of Microsatellite Instability testing. Facility and training manuals have been prepared and validated for effective skills development.
The objective of the present proposal is to set up a state-of-the-art educational training course in Microsatellite Instability (MSI) genetic testing at a training facility in Cyprus. The innovative transfer will make use of the expertise provided by two of the collaborating partners in MSI testing approaches in order to contribute to the skills of the trained force. It will result in trained personnel in MSI genetic testing who will work locally in established, accredited facilities and who will use specialised material and communicate at a European and International level by making use of an e-based platform.
The reasoning behind the project is the need for an educational course for the benefit of trainees wishing to receive post-tertiary education on the diagnosis of colorectal cancer status.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the 3rd most common malignancy in males and females around the world. Surgical resection is the primary treatment modality for early stage CRC (stage 1-3) and the most powerful tool for assessing prognosis following potentially curative surgery is a pathology analysis of the resected specimen. Although the parameters that determine pathology stage are the strongest predictors of postoperative outcome, other clinical, molecular and histological features may influence prognosis independent of stage. One such parameter is MSI, testing for which is not currently carried out in Cyprus, due to the lack of trained, specialised investigators. Approximately 180 new cases of CRC are diagnosed each year in Cyprus, of which about 90% are referred to our hospital. Unfortunately, the absence of trained personnel who could stratify patients by MSI status leads to a failing in determining the genetic predisposition and other predictive factors which foresee response to treatment.
MSI refers to the expansion or contraction of short repeated DNA sequences that are caused by insertion or deletion of repeated units. The identification of MSI in tumours indicates a severe deficiency of DNA mismatch repair followed by loss of one of the DNA MMR proteins. Preliminary studies suggest that the molecular features of MSI may influence patient outcome, independent of stage at presentation. The presence of MSI is of potential clinical relevance in making treatment decisions.
The consortium of the proposed project is composed of trainees, scientists, doctors, research nurses and technicians from SMEs, hospitals and academia. All participants are respectable industrial, educational, and research-committed organisations.
This consortium aims at establishing an accredited training course, in creating the relevant training material in the languages used locally, in setting up an e-based learning platform on MSI testing, in organising training seminars/workshops/conferences, in improving skills of trained scientists and in publishing widely for the ultimate benefit of professionals.
