Title Green Roof Installation & Maintenance Qualifications
Project Number UK/11/LLP-LdV/TOI-459
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Country UK-United Kingdom
Marketing Text Green/Living Roof is the title given to a building top which has plant life. They offer many benefits, from obvious – encourage biodiversity, increase roof life span, provide thermal/acoustic insulation, help manage intensive rainfall, to less obvious – assist filtration of atmospheric pollution, improve building aesthetics, improve mental health/wellbeing. This project is globally unique, though Green roofing is a developing industry, at the outset of the project no accredited training existed to develop technician/supervisory workforce who install and maintain this product. Therefore employers had one option, to train their workforce themselves. This project has linked vocational educators/trainers/researchers/scientists and employers to develop high quality qualifications. In this way we will grow the industry and help ensure a basic quality assurance in training delivers an ecological solution to urban planning need. Green roofs offer solutions for a low carbon European economy.
Summary The project addressed a significant gap in specialist horticulture training required to build and maintain Green Roofs. The project team worked with occupational skills councils and have developed occupational standards for Green Roofs this has enabled the development of EU L3/4 vocational qualifications for technicians (those who will install and maintain green roofs)and supervisors (those who train the technicians and ensure good quality assurance of projects). Therefore the project is supporting the supply side of what is a relatively new European industry.
The project identified the areas of expertise required for installing and maintaining green roofs. This is primarily based in the EU member states of Austria and Switzerland. The project team have undertaken technical information gathering activity in both of these regions and also in Scandinavia in order to ensure the content of the training material which has been developed is reflective of established Europe wide methods of installation and maintenance.
At the outset project partners undertook research activity in order to identify the current market conditions that exist throughout the continent which the qualifications must cater for. The findings have informed the team who have been selected to develop the qualifications and accompanying teaching/learning resources.
The qualifications have been piloted in England, Hungary, Sweden, Switzerland and Greece. Accreditation has been aquired in the UK and is being sought from appropriate national bodies in all partner countries.
The project is being promoted in both Europe and the wider World via the project web site and social media. In addition the project was promoted at the World Green Roof Congress which was hosted in Copenhagen in September 2012 and the World Green Infrastructure Congress in Nante in September 2013.
