Marketing Text Le projet VECTAR a développé un système innovant soutenu par la technologie informatique pour soutenir la formation sur le travail, la supervision et l'évaluation des compétences des infirmières vétérinaires en cours de formation.
The acquisition of safe and effective clinical skills, that meet employer and (where relevant) professional regulator requirements, are key to veterinary nurse training. These skills are largely gained in the workplace and should be supported by robust support and quality systems. Expectations in relation to competence must also be explicit, readily understood and transferable across international boundaries.
The aims of the project were:
1 To agree a list of essential practical skills in which veterinary nursing students must gain experience and competency during work-based learning, based on the ACOVENE Dossier of Competencies and taking into account feedback from employers and other stakeholders
2. To develop a European IT (internet)-based system for recording the acquisition of clinical skills and competency, based on the progress log developed by the RCVS and currently in use in the UK
3. To develop a readily accessible training package to facilitate the preparation of students’ learning supervisors in the workplace
4. To review and update the Dossier of Competencies as necessary
The project consortium
The consortium comprised organisations and schools of veterinary nursing from across Europe, encompassing a diverse range of geographical locations and veterinary cultures.
The majority of materials used by European schools of veterinary nursing to support work-based practical learning are paper-based and do not readily facilitate the monitoring of progress whilst students are out of college in the workplace. None of the partner schools offer training to the work-based supervisors of their students.
The project addressed these issues and produced adapted IT and training tools that were driven by stakeholder feedback and that were suitable for use across Europe.
Description The project had eleven work packages and three main phases: - initial trial, amendment and field test, final product and dissemination. The first phase, completed in June 2012, trialed and tested the unadapted UK IT tool and mentor training for European application and suitability. The partner institutions subsequently made amendments to both the IT tool and mentorship training package. The amended product was field tested with larger student cohorts, leading to final product development and wide dissemination in the veterinary education field during 2013.
