Marketing Text VAPVoS is using modern Internet technology to enhance creative-based, ICT supported learning processes, by utilizing products developed in the frame of project Interstudy, Autostudy and MoRobE.
Summary Today´s computer science and electrical engineering industries are characterized by rapidly occurring innovations and a continuous advancement of existing technologies. Therefore it is quite a challenge for higher education institutions, especially the vocational ones, to keep up with the high pace of technological innovation. Vocational education in the engineering fields has to be made more attractive for young people and feasible to full-time employees in order to maintain European leadership in product development. For vocational education institutions the main problems are the availability of (often expensive) up-to-date laboratory hardware as well as ICT-based learning materials for the classes, the lack of qualified teachers, and insufficient space in classes for capacious equipment. The project VAPVoS provided a web platform to encourage a remote sharing of expensive lab equipment via the internet. Within the VAPVoS platform real hardware labs as well as virtualized experiments and didactical materials can be shared among different institutions all over Europe. The main concepts that have been transferred, are the Distance Lab idea, Virtual Micro-Controller (VMCU) and the Network of Excellence, all of which are results of former LEONARDO DA VINCI projects. The results from these projects were successfully transferred to vocational schools in Germany, Estonia and Finland and combined to a collaborative learning platform. The major achievement is the consolidation of results from the mentioned projects to one platform.
The focus of this project was directed on the Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mechatronics education in vocational schools. These sectors are characterized by rapidly arising innovations and continued enhancement of existing technologies. Therefore it is quite a challenge to keep lab equipment and learning materials up to date. The vocational education in these mentioned areas needs to become more attractive and unified for young people as well as feasible for employees to stabilize the European leadership in product. VAPVoS addresses the problems by applying more state of the art Internet technology in the education. The Internet plays a very important role in nowadays young's life. Bringing the engineering studies into this topic will improve the studies significantly due to the improvement of teaching quality.
The key point in engineering education or related vocational training programs are practical exercises, lab work and experimentation. In many institutions, the amount of practical work within these training programs is often limited due to missing financial resources. Up to date lab equipment is very expensive and runs out of date rather quickly. The VAPVoS-Project implemented several web bases solutions to conquer the issues with a transfer of the distance lab platform from tertiary education to vocational. The basic products, were already proven in Estonia and Finland to raise the quality and availability of engineering studies. The HomeLab KIT for example, was implemented in schools curriculum and the overall feedback was very positive. Today`s Internet experience is characterized by social-networking. VAPVoS adopted this principle by implementing social components into the platform for teachers (e.g. short messaging, forum, evaluating learning material etc.). In the frame of the learners evaluation the effect of the implemented technology was evaluated (see evaluation Report).

The products developed within this project are focused on the Virtual Academy Platform for Vocational Schools (VAPVoS). VAPVoS is an interactive web platform that focuses on embedded system education using virtual and remote laboratory’s. The platform contains virtual and remote labs, learning materials, a semantic knowledge-base that offers advice on the fly, as well as a teachers environment that can be used by teachers to manage student groups classes and create virtual labs on their own. Learning units, that can be archived using the platforms materials, are described in the ECVET-Learning unit Description. To ensure quality and a close link to the requirements of the industry a survey was conducted to evaluate industry needs regarding the education of workers in the related fields.
