Description The Competencies Mapping Tool is an innovative online custom-made software tool enabling visualisation of the units and competences in the marine renewable energy sector. The tool has two functions; 1) competences mapping - enabling users to view the competences of a selected sub-sector of the marine renewable energy sector and the associated occupations that require those competences. In addition the EQF level the competences are required at for particular occupations are evident and 2) assessment mechanism - users who have participated in the Aqua-RET 2 training courses are able to view the learning outcomes they have achieved and the associated competences. The occupations for which these are relevant for are also viewable allowing users to see potential occupations and sub-sectors they could transfer to. For the competences mapping element the categories are broken down into; Sector<Sub-sector<Competencies<Occupation, Course, EQF level.
Target group Key stakeholders - private and public training providers, awarding bodies, marine renewables industry, ancillary sectors, employers and employees
Result The Competencies Mapping Tool is available online.
Area of application
The tool can be used by various audiences; employers, employees, training organisations, awarding bodies and individuals. 1) Employers can use the competences to form the basis of job descriptions and roles and aid in staff recruitment. It can also be used for staff development in terms of skills analysis to identify gaps in skills and knowledge in existing staff. 2) It can be used by training organisations to identify gaps in their curriculum and inform the development of new courses. 3) The tool can be used by awarding bodies by facilitating the development of new courses and also as a means to help recognise both formal and informal learning in terms of knowledge, skills and competences. 4) The tool can be used by employees and individuals to identify competences that they have which could be transferred to other sub-sectors and also to identify competences that they may not have but which are necessary for them to progress further in their career.
Users from ancillary sectors can identify competences they have which are relevant for various sub-sectors of the marine renewable energy sector. This can facilitate the transfer of skills from ancillary sectors to the marine renewables sector. The tool allows users to see what competences are required for different occupations and also the European Qualification Framework (EQF) level those competences are required at. The EQF aims to relate different countries' national qualifications systems to a common European reference framework. Therefore the Competence Mapping Tool also facilitates mobility between countries as users are able to relate their own national qualifications systems to the identified EQF level.
