Title Spread the sign - Communication in national sign language
Project Number 2008-1-SE1-LEO05-00398
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Marketing Text This is an excellent tool for vocational pupils going abroad on mobility wanting to prepare there language skills. Most vocational areas are covered and are easily searchable in the dictionary www.spreadthesign.com . The web page is in text, sound and videos of sign language. It covers languages such English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Swedish, Czech, Lithuanian, Finish and Russian. More languages to come in the future when it expands globally.
Spread the Sign is a web tool, a visual dictionary of sign language that,
among other things, can increase the possibilities to do work experience
abroad. Hopefully it can also contribute to increase the possibilities for a
common future labour market for deaf professionals in Europe.
Many people believe that sign language is an international language,
but that’s not the case. Just like spoken languages, sign language is different
all over the world. The web tool Spread the sign; will make it easier
for deaf people to learn another sign language. Sign language is the first
language for a deaf person and the mother tongue would be their second.
That means English is their third language. Many deaf students in
secondary schools are finding it difficult with a third language and prefer
to refrain from learning English.
Since 2007, the website www.spreadthesign.com is an expanding visual
dictionary of sign language and written language. From 2009, it contains
at least ten different languages. Any equivalent to this dictionary does
not exist today. Individual and international sign language dictionaries
are available in various countries, but none that take such a comprehensive
approach in the same way as Spread the Sign.
