Title Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Accreditation good-practice framework for EU employers of engineers and technicians
Project Number LLP/LDV/TOI/2010/IRL-502
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Engineers Ireland (the professional body for engineers in Ireland) and the Irish Government have co-funded and developed over the past decade an excellent framework model which employers of engineering professionals can use to connect disparate training, learning & development initiatives under a best-practice umbrella.
Over 135 engineering companies in Ireland have achieved the Engineers Ireland CPD Accredited Employer Standard over the past 10 years including market leaders such Boston Scientific, Hewlett Packard, Novartis, PM Group and RPS Group.

The objective of this project was to share the expertise of the Engineers Ireland CPD Accredited Employer standard with European partners and to learn from them how they provide lifelong learning for engineers and technicians at all levels of education.
The ultimate impact was a move towards establishing a EU best-practice model for efficient and effective lifelong learning programmes among leading employers, allowing them to 'move up the value chain' in terms of the level and calibre of work they can undertake. This elevation of standards, through upskilling, was of prime benefit to their technical staff.
The project ran for 2 years (October 2010 -September 2012) and involved each partner organisation guiding an engineering company towards CPD Accreditation. This process was over seen by project leaders Engineers Ireland who have developed the CPD accredited employer standard over the past 10 years.
The pilot phase of the project started on January 1st, 2010 and finished on February 28th, 2012. In this pilot phase each partner country selected an engineering firm to work with as part of the project. Each selected firm was audited by Engineers Ireland CPD Team to assess the level of CPD currently in practice in the firm. Recommendations from this audit were given in a CPD accreditation audit report form so that each firm knew in what areas they needed to improve in order to become a CPD Accredited.
When the implementation phase commenced, a CPD masterclass symposium was organised to te together all of the learning and knowledge shared over the pilot phase so that each partner was fully equipped to guide their selected firm towards CPD accreditation.
At the end of the implementation phase each partner in the project conducted, by themselves, a CPD accreditation audit of their selected firms and wrote a CPD accreditation report. The end result of this is that there is now 4 CPD accredited oganisations in Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia (EDP distribution, SEARCH CORPORATION, TSC Maribor and MATADOR Group)
