Marketing Text The aim of the project was the expansion of vocational education and training content in the field of restoration and conservation through the establishment of building material archives where workshops on dealing with historical and ecological materials and traditional techniques were offered.
In recent years, historic building materials were often abandoned for financial reasons, until their historical and cultural value and their contribution to resource conservation became aware. In the 1970s it became obvious that gross mistakes were made in the restoration of historic buildings. Craftsmen used wrong materials or the wrong techniques and thus destroyed more they they preserved. This led to conflicts with the goals of historic preservation. There were not enough skilled craftsmen, who mastered the ancient techniques and knew how to deal with old materials.
The project objective was to establish a venue in each participating country, which should serve as a "center of excellence for knowledge about and further education in preservation." This should be achieved by establishing study depots (as reference exhibits), which were equipped with a collection of historic building materials, parts, components and tools and a library holding information on historical construction methods and technologies but also about recent research activities within historic civil engineering. Workshops on traditional craft techniques and the use of historic building materials should be offered in the center of excellence as integral part of the project.
Description First, in all countries involved, a research and analysis phase was carried out, which gave precise information about the current state of training in the restoration sector and the national conditions of conservation. It turned out that in Italy and Turkey there would be by law difficulties setting up an archive of components similar to that in Trebsen. Innovative alternatives were found. After a study visit in Trebsen where they could get an impression of the archive and the training courses for professionals in historic preservation offered, the project partners were able to design and pilot own workshop content within a national context. The results were summarized in a training manual. The educational content is thus available to and reproducible by interested others. Likewise, the cataloging of materials from Trebsen was adapted. An mobility project planned within the Transfer of Innovation project could only be realized by the German delegation, since the mobility project applications of the other project partners were rejected. The German crafts men and trainers could get a hands-on impression of various national restoration techniques and exchange know-how. The ARK project was documented by means of a traveling exhibition, which could still be shown during the project period on a restoration fair in Estonia and was subsequently shown so far in Italy. The working results of the project were also presented in a brochure which gives an idea of the lessons learned and the implementation of the project. The publications incurred during the duration of the project, such as the training manual, a summary of the research report or national case studies are still available on the project's website for download. All project partners and their national partner’s awareness of the issue of crafts conservation has been sharpened. New partnerships could be formed or old intensified. Even after the project, the project partners have used fairs, panel discussions and similar events to disseminate on the topic and the ARK project. The archives which were established during the project will endure.
