The DigCurV network brings together organisations in Europe, Canada and the USA with strong track records in the field of digital libraries and digital preservation to establish a framework for vocational training for digital curators in the library, archives, museums and cultural activities sector.
New jobs are emerging for digital curators with the skills needed for the long-term management of the digital resources being collected by cultural institutions as a result of the growth of the digital economy. The DigCurV framework will help enable staff and employers to develop the new skills needed for these jobs through vocational training.
DigCurV aims to involve centres of competence and vocational training in digital curation, as well as educational, cultural institutions and policy makers to establish a framework for vocational training in digital curation. It also aims to serve continuing professional development for staff in cultural institutions collecting digital archives.
DigCurV will establish a multilateral network to extend vocational training for digital curators in the library, archives, museums and cultural activities sectors. The project addresses the availability of training for staff to develop the skills needed for the long-term management of digital collections which are being created by cultural institutions in the information society and as a result of the i2010 strategy. New jobs are emerging for digital curators across Europe and internationally but there is evidence that employers are facing recruitment difficulties due to skills shortages. There is thus demand from staff and employers for vocational training to develop new skills in this field.
DigCurV brings together six organisations from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Lithuania and Italy and third country organisations from Canada and the USA all with a strong track records of international work in the field of digital libraries and digital preservation. This 30 month project will identify, analyse and profile existing training opportunities and methodologies, survey training needs in the sector identifying the key skills and competences required of digital curators. DigCurV will establish a curriculum framework from which training programmes can be developed; the curriculum will be tested and evaluated by stakeholders before publication in at least the four languages of the project. The partners will disseminate the results and activities widely in Europe and internationally seeking to expand the network. A final conference for policy and decision makers is planned to raise awareness of the curriculum and promote its exploitation.
DigCurV aims to reach European centres of competence in digital curation, individuals from educational and cultural institutions and policy makers. Its longer term impact will be establishing an international curriculum for vocational training in digital curation and a framework for continuing professional development and mobility for staff in the 58,000 cultural institutions collecting digital archives in Europe.
DigCurV will establish a multilateral stakeholder network which aims to extend the availability of vocational training for digital curators in the library, archives, museums and cultural activities sectors. The project consortium includes six organisations from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Lithuania and Italy and two organisations from Canada and the USA, all with a strong track records of international work in the field of digital libraries and digital preservation. Associated partners of the network include organisations involved in vocational training for digital curators (continuing education programmes in universities, training organisations), employing organisations offering in-service training such as libraries, archives, museums and other culture agencies. The network aims to facilitate cooperation between these actors to:
• identify and classify the training opportunities that are currently available,
• analyse the key skills and core competences required in the sector, and
• identify the trends in this rapidly developing field.
DigCurV will define a framework curriculum for implementation in vocational training courses for digital curation with the direct aim of impacting on VET in this field for the sector. By defining the key skills and core competences required and disseminating good practices the DigCurV curriculum will provide a framework that benefits both employers and individuals seeking new skills to adapt and equip them to take up new jobs as digital curators.
The partners in the network will actively disseminate and communicate European expertise in the field, the results of the project’s activities and its recommendations. Throughout the lifetime of the project the partners will work together to extend the network to incorporate more actors (both educators and employers) with the aim of promoting the adoption of the curriculum framework and its implementation in training courses across the Europe and internationally.
