Marketing Text The choice of career, the first step into the workig world and the associated descisions are of momentous significance for all young people. The opportunities for young people with disabilities to find a trainee position matching their career choice are often very small. The work histories of people with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus are therefore often characterised by dissatisfaction. The findings of the future workshop and of the survey make it clear that those affected often do not receive any individual career profiling. The progression of their training and career tends to be determined by others. Wheelchair users in particular are frequently pointed to a job in the field of office and administrative work.
Description The project shows examples of employees with these disabilities who exercise self-determination and successfully go their own way. Specialised career advisory staff can often give important guidance on choosing a career. In order to be able to cater to the individual needs of people with disabilities in a more differentiated manner, a basic knowledge of the symptoms of the disabilites is required. As adivsors are usually responsible for people with a wide variety of disabilities, this is hard to achieve without training or other sources of information.
All advisors and specialist staff involved in careers advice and the training and employment placement of people with disabilities who would like to expand their know-how and improve their service for people with SBH:
.Careers advisors, rehabilitation adisors and employment placement officers from job centers
. Case managers
. Job coaches
. integration services employees
Result We would like to discuss possibilities for expanding the range of career choices for people with SBH, and especially for wheelchair users, with those involved in placing young people in training and careers as part of a training course. There will be a nuanced discussion of the approaches to empowerment and thus how these can be integrated into careers advice and guidance.
Area of application With the help of this instrument, specialist staff will be shown approaches to individualised assistance for advising people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. The exchange of experiences on the topic of "career opportunities for wheelchair users" will facilitate further impetus for expanding the range of career choices.
