Title Intercultural education of nurses in Europe - IENE 2
Project Number UK/10/LLP-LdV/TOI-386
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Country UK-United Kingdom
Marketing Text Transcultural competence is a health and social care imperative in the twenty-first century. The migration of both nurses and populations is a challenge to the delivery of culturally competent care. The project IENE2 contribute to the improvement in quality of vocational education and training of nurses in Europe.
The Transfer of Innovation project IENE 2 adapted and integrated the innovative transcultural nursing education model developed in the previous Leonardo da Vinci Partnership IENE 1 project “Intercultural education of nurses and medical staff in Europe”
The PTT/IENE model is based on the Papadopoulos, Tilki and Taylor (PTT) model implemented in the UK by Middlesex University of London and widely used in many other universities.
The implementation of the innovative IENE2 model in IVET and CVET systems in the four partner countries enabled nurses and other health care professionals from the partner countries to acquire transversal and transcultural key competences and new skills in order for them to be able to adapt to a variety of tasks in their working lives and provide culturally competent care in the increasingly multicultural Europe.
The transfer methodology was made in three steps:
First, the partners did this research on the specific competences necessary to provide transcultural education to various categories of nurses and health care professionals from the project countries. The results of this research were used to design the objectives of the Training of Trainers (ToT).
The training modules and training materials were created and four workshops were organized in in Belgium, Germany, Romania and France and the teachers and trainers were prepared for implementing the trans-cultural PTT/IENE model.
Secondly, the PTT/IENE Model was adapted and piloted in initial and continuing education and training of nurses in four partners' countries. Ten pilot implementation projects were carried out successfully, 2 in Belgium, 2 in Romania, 2 in Germany and 4 in France, some of them continuing to use the PTT/IENE model after project’s conclusion.
Finally, the final products are available for integration in regional, national and European IVET and CVET systems. The implementation projects demonstrate different techniques for the adaptation of the PTT/IENE model, showing that the model is flexible enough to be transferred into the context of different cultures and institutional backgrounds.

The main product of IENE2 project is a European trans-cultural Model structured in the four stages: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity and cultural competence.
Piloted and tested, the PTT/IENE model is available on the www.ieneproject.eu multilingual web site together with a Strategic Guide for the implementation. This innovative model can be used for transcultural education of different categories of nurses and health care professionals for improving their cultural competent care.
Another result of the IENE 2 project is the innovative Training of Trainers (ToT) model: the partners created an innovative intensive training methodology, modules and training materials . Implemented and tested during the workshops, this TOT model can be used to prepare the teachers and trainers to implement the PTT/IENE model.
This training model was added to the tools created in the previous IENE1 project (informative , learning and teaching guide), all together embaded on www.ieneproject.eu platform.
