VEBSU was set in an economic climate where
all European partner countries faced a fall in employment levels. The project aimed to develop staff competence and VET business start-up programmes, encouraging and nurturing enterprise and self employment and supporting students and graduates in starting up new businesses.
The project partnership consisted of Clevercherry (UK), UCB (UK), IUC (Bulgaria), ESHTSI (Spain) and TTVAM (Lithuania).
VESBU provided business expertise to support educational institutions to enhance the way in which they developed learners’ entrepreneurial knowledge and skill and used digital resources to support that process in their institutions. It also positioned learners to use digital resources to promote themselves in the marketplace.
VESBU has proved a significant development, as it has demonstrated the added value that business-led HEI collaboration can bring to the LEONARDO TOI Programme and the contribution that business enterprises can offer educational institutions (Higher and Further Education) involved with facilitating regional and local economic development and, in the process, assisting VET students’ transition into employment, self-employment and starting their own business, should be formally recognised in the LEONARDO Programme.
VEBSU can be seen as a triple case study: why a web design and media specialist SME’s multifaceted expertise was able to act as the creator, manager and deliverer of VET projects; why it is helpful to make all institutions, roles and resources that support the development of entrepreneurship transparent; and, why social capital is vital to VET courses.
As such, the benefit of a business-led Leonardo TOI partnership has been;
• VET organisations tapping into the forms of expertise SMEs have in order to diversify the design and delivery of VET programmes, and enhance entrepreneurship in appropriate programmes;
• formal recognition by the VET partners of the forms of expertise SMEs have to plan, design and deliver VET programmes and embed entrepreneurship in those programmes;
• encouraging transparency and audits of approaches in relation to the impact of entrepreneurship methods and pedagogies in VET programmes
Throughout the project, partners have implemented new systems, practices and e-resources, whilst supporting VET staff and enabling VET students and graduates to become self-enterprising in the labour market. This was achieved through each partner addressing gaps in their skills, knowledge and competencies, implementing new practices and activities, and providing access to and aligning new business and e-commerce resources to their VET curriculum.
In addition to this, partners created new industry and business support networks that impacted on teaching programmes and ensured that business skills were embedded within VET programmes. Evidenced of meeting project objectives are demonstrated through the partnership’s ‘over’ achievement of outputs.
Specifically, each partner now has at least 5 members of staff trained and equipped with the understanding, knowledge, e-resources and networks they need to support VET beneficiaries into employability and self employment through business start-up, empowering beneficiaries to learn and practice enterprise skills sets through structured teaching programmes. As a result, partners reported a significant strengthening of their business and enterprise networks and connections with external organisations such as chambers of commerce and business support organisations. As a result, each partner has developed visible infrastructures of business networks, business e-resources and new business processes, practices and systems embedded within their VET curriculum.
200 students and graduates (50 over the anticipated output level) have been supported through the project, giving them the advice and information they need, with partner organisations having adapted the resources provided by the lead partner to ensure relevance to their own country. 20 new businesses (5 over the anticipated level) have been established during the life of the project, with in excess of 60 business action plans (twice as many as anticipated) having been completed by VET students and graduates.
The VEBSU website & digital resources that have been developed within the project will be maintained and made accessible after the end of the project. As such all the e-resources transferred by the Lead Partner Clevercherry will be maintained, as will the links and guidance materials as developed by the partners as well as existing guidance materials that have been redesigned. The website platform will be maintained by Clevercherry for at least 2 years after the end of the project.
VET partners, given their geographical locations re cross border trading and Government priorities for the need business growth in the context of increased internationalisation, teaching in English, was recognised within VEBSU as a vital part of entrepreneurship education, and will continue beyond the life of the project, as will the international exchange of VET students created through the ERASMUS as a result of VEBSU collaboration and relationship building.
All 4 VET partners will continue to deliver their VEBSU business programmes and business facilitation methodology as the staff are trained and Business Ambassadors identified and relationships developed to support these roles; resources are in place & aligned to VET curriculum, as are business networks to support VET students & graduates. All partners intend to apply the VEBSU business infrastructure to other VET areas to extend the opportunities and access to support for business start up activities.
The partnership relationship is being maintained across the consortium, and joint learning being progressed through further project development within Leonardo TOI 2012 and TEMPUS 2012.
