The proposed project deals with a transnational ‘training partnership’ between the Walter-Eucken-Berufskolleg in Düsseldorf and the training center CERFAL in Paris. The partnership’s main aim lies in the promotion of its students’ capacity to successfully operate in intercultural contexts, thereby increasing their degree of professional as well as personal mobility.
The participants can be divided into two groups of apprentices: on the German part there are a) future Groß- und Außenhändler (wholesalers and export clerks) who are taking part in a supplementary qualification course focussing on European trade, and b) future Werbekaufleute (advertising specialists). On the French part there are trainees preparing a) to become Assistant(e)s de Gestion PMI, and b) for a BTS communication des entreprises. The two groups of German participants have been selected in view of their special needs concerning intercultural competence. Considering increasing globalisation wholesalers/export clerks and advertising specialists have to be able to act and think globally in order to penetrate new, foreign markets and acquire new target groups and/or to open up the existing national market to international customers. Indeed, an important, but quite often neglected requirement for long-lasting success in international business is the awareness of culturally induced differences with reference e.g. to work attitudes and organisation. However, this cultural awareness is very difficult to teach in the classroom, as it is strongly connected with personal, real life experience.
This is why Walter-Eucken-Berufskolleg and its French partner have developed the proposed project which is based on an intensive preparatory course taking place in the different schools followed by a three week period of work experience in France or Germany, respectively.
During the preparatory course the German and French trainees create and exchange presentations on the existing structure and different jobs / job positions of their companies as well as guidelines with regard to successful presentations. By doing so the trainees not only learn how to employ different kinds of media (e-mail, PowerPoint, CD-Rom, video) for their aims but they can also work out cultural similarities and differences with the help of material their respective partners have created for them. As the preparation takes place in French or English, the trainees also acquire the necessary language skill as a basic tool of intercultural competence.
In a next step the students get the opportunity to enrich and further improve their newly acquired skills by spending three weeks in the partners’ companies in Düsseldorf and Paris. During this time the trainees will work as tandem on a project together with their French or German partner, thereby experiencing international teamwork. The joint work on a project will not only help the trainees to gain a first-hand knowledge of different educational systems and job requirements but it will also confront them with different work attitudes.
