Project Type Transfer of Innovation
RetAiL is an ICT-based course, consisting of nine modules in retailing management for adults.
In retailing there is much need for education as there is great turnover in manpower within this field. This turnover leads to lower productivity than need be in this sector as well as a loss of critical experience which is expensive to replace. With easier access to education the turnover will lessen and we will have a better educated workforce in retailing.
The material in RetAiL is designed to equip the learners with the necessary domains of knowledge and skills within the retail industry. It provides an in-depth theoretical base to managing retail organisations while also focusing on solving the day to day operational and strategic issues faced by retail management.
This project is targeted at adults working in retailing who have little formal education. These are workers, who in an increasingly globalised market, need to both enhance their education and develop their interpersonal capabilities. by facilitating their access to lifelong learning, the RetAiL study material gives them the opportunity to develop and formalise their education, while enhancing their sense of personal fulfilment.
The aim of the project was to transfer and implement an existing written material for teaching retailing management into an ICT-based learning material based on modules for open learning environment targeted for adult learners. Thus the group working in retail management without much formal education will be able to add to its knowledge and skills while still being on the labour market. This added access to ITC-based lifelong learning will lead to added knowledge in the field of vocational training in retail and will add to the growth and employment rates in a field, where the turnover in manpower is very high.
The material is suitable for adult learners who have been employed in retailing without much formal education and who wish to add to and formalize their education. This material gives thus both added knowledge and ability and contributes to the learners’ personal fulfilment.
The training material developed by the RetAiL project provides an in-depth theoretical base to managing retail organisations. Through case-studies it also focuses on solving the day-to-day operational and strategic problems faced by retail management. At the same time there is a great emphasis on the students developing their interpersonal capabilities so as to make them more effective at leading and influencing the people around them.
Adult learners have several characteristics that differentiate them from the young students and this is taken into consideration when the modules are adapted from the written form into the on-line modules.
The material consists of nine modules that can be taken separately or as a whole cycle. The structure is flexible to encourage employees in retail management to develop their education and skills while still working.
