Title Lab Technicians for European Life Science
Project Number DE-09/LLP-LdV/IVT/281409
Project Type Mobility - initial vocational training IVT
Individual Participation Not possible
Marketing Text Future lab technicians acquire practical experience in their field of work combined with improved language and intercultural skills.
The programme allows students of the College of Further Education in Hilden (Berufskolleg Hilden des Kreises Mettmann), who are being trained as biological laboratory assistants, to spend their work placement abroad. The placement of thirteen weeks is an integrated part of the course.
During the placement the students can experience the organization of life science companies and laboratories. The students experience, how important it is to work in a reliable, efficient as well as economic way.
The students gained an insight into the everyday routine of a laboratory and acquired new methods or just more experience in applying what they had already learned. Apart from the specialist aspects of the placement, the students gained communicative and intercultural advancements. Teamwork with colleagues of various cultural backgrounds is important to develop or increase the students’ intercultural competence. Moreover their language skills were promoted, above all with respect to specialist language.
In 2009 26 students spent their placement in various workgroups of Research Institutes and Universities in Finland, England, Scotland, Spain, Slovenia, Netherlands and Ireland.
The students had to participate in the routine work of the laboratory. They had a supervisor, who trained them in the application of some commonly used methods of the laboratory. They worked on a project of their own while still taking part in the routine work. The students had to write a report about one aspect of their work, which was handed in November 2009.
Apart from the supervision within the laboratory, a school supervisor was appointed. He/She kept in touch with the students by e-mail and visited them once during their placement at the laboratory. Thereby he/she gained an insight into their work, established the cooperation between the school and the company/institute and discussed details of the report
Evaluation of the programme is ensured through the Leonardo beneficiary’s report and a report about the placement which is thoroughly assessed and marked by the school supervisor and a second colleague. The students related their experience within a meeting with the first-year students of the course and presented the project to the public during the last “information day” (Tag der offenen Tür) of the BK Hilden.
Validation is ensured by various official documents and the “Europass Mobility”, which is signed by the school and the host institution.
