The importance of automation in the process industries has increased dramatically in recent years. In the highly industrialized countries, process automation serves to enhance product quality, master the whole range of products, improve process safety and plant availability, efficiently utilize resources and lower emissions. In the rapidly developing countries, mass production is the main motivation for applying process automation. The main actor in automation is the industrial robots which are widely used in highly industrialized countries.
The lack of qualified personnel (from worker level to manager level) in automation technology is one of the most important problems to apply automation. This problem arises especially in SMEs, where the automated applications are rarely realized because of lack of information in every level of personal from managers to workers.
The main aim and objective of this project is to create a training module about automation with industry robots and sensors to educate the managers/employees of SMEs and technical teachers in vocational schools about automation systems in industry and robot technology. It is proposed to get a training package (possibly for two weeks) which can be applied to those target groups which is created according to special needs of Turkish market and Turkish vocational education system.
Moreover, we would like to prepare a technical laboratory which contains either/both simple training robots or robot simulation programs in context of this project.
There are 4 partners from 3 european countries: Turkey, Germany and Poland
The participation of professional organizations, training institutions, research center and also SMEs will empower the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed model and this will contribute to the sustainability of the project activities.
The easy implementation will be ensured by incremental redesign method which will be applied in all steps and workpackages of the project. The final target will be divided into subtargets which will be defined as milestones in order to ensure to reach the desired target successfully.
Automation plays an increasingly important role in the global economy and in daily experience. Engineers strive to combine automated devices with mathematical and organizational tools to create complex systems for a rapidly expanding range of applications and human activities.
Currently, for manufacturing companies, the purpose of automation has shifted from increasing productivity and reducing costs, to broader issues, such as increasing quality and flexibility in the manufacturing process.
As nowadays many companies need to increase the production quality and efficiency, they need to integrate the existing facilities (from many vendors) to new, innovative A&RM solutions. To do it, they need training on how to select, integrate and operate the A&RM systems in order to achieve the highest efficiency and the shortest ROI (Return On Investment) period.
The main problem in this sector is the lack of system and permanent mechanism for qualified resources development. If we analyze this problem, the following points can be found out;
Lack of vocational qualifications (VQs)
Lack of qualified work force construction of automation , maintenance of automation and user training services,
Lack of system of validity of non-formal and informal learning
There is no structural system for vocational qualifications and validation of formal, non-formal and informal learning in order to establish sustainable links between labour market and education. This is an urgent and very fundamental need for having a VET system which responds the needs of labour market and individual. There are thousands of SMEs which can use automation systems with robots in production of several sectors but do not have any vision and qualified employees which can apply those automation methods in production.
There are a number of training courses available in Automation and Robotics on the market, including many eLearning solutions, but they mainly concentrate on A&R (Automation and Robotics) products from a specific vendor, often not covering complex issues related to integration of A&RM solutions and mainly are not suitable to the specific needs of SMEs.
Moreover, these courses do not support a combination with other forms of learning, such as learning groups, and therefore they do not support knowledge sharing among the trainees.
Another problem with the existing training courses is that they quickly become obsolete as the advances in A&RM technology are rather often. An issue to be addressed is a missing unification of training and qualifications in this technical area in Europe.
In VILAROB project, a new innovative training system will be developed about the automation systems and robotics. The training system will not only include the theorethical knowledgde about the automation systems in industry, but the technical and practical examples which will be given in a laboratory, called Virtual Laboratory for Automation and Robotics. The ISAR - Integrated Set of vocational trainings in the field: most advanced solutions in technology, organization and safety in Automated and Robotized manufacturing systems – Pilot project will be selected as base and the training methods will be transferred in context of VILAROB project.
In context of VILAROB project, a laboratory will be designed where the trainees can find several application examples about automation with industrial robots and different software hardware and mechanical instruments which are use in automation industry, especially with robotics.
Knowledge transferred in training courses to be developed in this project, will make possible to increase the productivity and efficiency of production in enterprises, especially in SMEs through the improvement of qualifications of people to be trained.
The main target groups will be (1) managers, (2) employees in SMEs and unemployed workers, but also (3) teachers/trainers and consultants. The main target sectors are: SMEs active in production, which have potential to automate complete production or a part of production chain and the basic vocational education institutes which are supporting the development of the SMEs staff.

VILAROB will be based on a wide spectrum of innovative results from previous project and vocational training programs of project partners. These innovative results are:
• Innovative eLearning environment for generation/extension/adaptation of training courses and communication platform for virtual study circle, in the scope of blended learning approach, developed based on the open source/free eLearning software ‘Moodle’ (ISAR),
• Innovative holistic training content addressing multidisciplinary issues regarding automated and robotized systems, covering the whole life-cycle from planning up to operation of automated systems in SMEs, training content regarding machinery and equipment utilization.
• Methodology guidelines, ontology and qualification assessment procedure facilitating the training content generation, organisation and execution as well as usage of eLearning tools, and an unified assessment of qualifications achieved (ISAR).
Key reason for the selection of above project is to transfer the existing complex innovative training content regarding utilization of automated and robotized systems, by use of advanced blended learning technologies, to a large SME auditorium as well as to teachers and trainers in vocational education organizations. This requires an adaptation and extension of existing training material and technologies with respect to the requirements of advanced envisaged eLearning training system, also taking into account the needs and requirements of targeted user groups.
The transfer of these results within the scope of VILAROB project will offer a significantly extended scope of contents related to automation and robotics, what is the first component of the added value, whereby the main added value part will be realised through the innovative eLearning approach, offering collaborative learning facilities, experience exchange among learners, interactive mentoring by the ICT and other domain experts, which is an excellent opportunity to react on and to fulfil needs of SME community and professional training organisations.
Additionally the VILAROB project will be more practice and technic oriented where the ISAR Project has mainly focused on a eLearning Training methods which contains theorethical information but neither practical insturments nor visaul and software tools used in this area. Therefore VILAROB project will focus on the following aspects during creating the target training module in Automation and Robotic Systems:
• Application examples about automatization of some processes in SMEs
• Visual Examples about using robotic in automation technology
• Sensors and Automation, and examples about sensors
• Examples of usage of automation systems: introduction to simulators or automation software
• As the initial developer of this project is involved as a partner in current partnership, the methods used in ISAR project and the experiences gained in that project can be used in this project, which will play an important role in reaching targets successfully.
