Summary The main objective of the project is to transfer the model of Animateur Curriculum from Slovenia and UK to Estonia with purpose to develop similar VET curriculum in Kuressaare Ametikool (Kuressaare Regional Training Centre).
The main approach is to use the model of both partners’ curricula, adapting this with the needs of Estonian tourism industry and develop a 2-year curriculum for VET institutions. By developing new curricula VET institutions can train specialists with special skills and knowledge who can work in tourism sector in SPA-s, hotels, activity centers, holiday camps, cruise ships, museums etc as activity or event organizers and entertainers. By increasing the number of skilled people the quality of tourism product and service will improve and finally the export sales income of Estonia will grow larger.
According to the draft of Estonian National Strategic plan of Tourism 2007-2013 the concept of tourism in Estonia has to go through changes. To be competitive in Europe and globally there is a need to find and develop new products and new services for customers. The research in tourism sector refers to the need for more activity oriented tourism, more attention to families and children; to satisfy equally both to local and foreign customer. This new curricula is one possibility to fill this gap by providing market-targeted vocational training to prepare skilled labour with such kind of skills and knowledge.
There is also another angle – the popularity of general tourism training is decreasing and young people are not attracted to study just "tourism", the national VET politicians and VET institutions have to find new ways for increasing the quality of training, match better to the needs of labour market and also be more attractive. Provision of specialized curriculum offers new possibility to attract young people to choose VET school after gymnasium. Lately there is also lack of workplaces, specially for gymnasium graduates, this path will allow find job in tourism sector all over Europe.
There will be 2 partners in the project who run animateur curricula, Vocational College for Catering and Tourism in Bled, Slovenia and Park Lane College in Leeds, UK. These are different curricula with different entering conditions and outcomes.
Kuressaare Ametikool (KRTC) together with MTÜ Saarte Turismi Arenduskeskus (NGO Development Centre of Islands' Tourism) and its network will map the existing and future needs of Estonian tourism industry. With participation of REKK (The National Examination and Qualifications Centre) and experts from UK and SI the new 2-year curriculum will be developed.
