Summary Mobile Learning is a new paradigm of Technology-enhanced Learning in full alignment with the key objectives of the 21st Century Education and Training. Wireless and Mobile Devices, widely available nowadays, are exploited to allow anyone to access and interact with digital and learning resources from anywhere, at anytime and with a variety of devices. On the other hand, Language Learning is a top priority area of the new framework for European cooperation in education and training, recently adopted by the Council of Education Ministers of the European Union and can benefit the most from these developments. In this context, the MW-TELL Project addresses the needs of the emerging mobile-supported training services for the provision of on-demand Lifelong Language Learning, beyond time, place and device restrictions.
During the last years m-learning has attracted the attention of technology-enhanced learning community mainly as a side effect of the growth of the mobile communications industry.
Mobile and Wireless Devices can be used for educational purposes and provide several benefits to the learning process:
- from allowing learners to use their idle time while traveling or waiting at public transports to check for new learning material (promoting flexibility)
- to performing certain learning activities, like participating in a forum discussion or interacting in real contexts with people, places and events (supporting authentic and meaningful social learning)
M-learning can change the way learners interact with their teachers/tutors and co-learners, and it can support the continuation of these interactions not only outside the classroom, but also when the learner is away from his/her desktop PC.
M-Learning has the potential to significantly assist Language Learning by:
- Enabling learners to access language learning materials and communicate with their teachers and/or peers at anytime, anywhere crossing the border between formal and informal learning.
- Facilitating learners to participate in synchronous and/or asynchronous collaborative learning activities where writing, speaking and listening skills can be significantly improved.
Within this context, the MW-TELL Project addresses the needs of the emerging mobile-supported training services for the provision of on-demand lifelong language learning, beyond time, place and device restrictions.
