Title PAWS FOR MEDITERRANEAN FORESTS
Project Number DE/09/LLP-LdV/TOI/147 245
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Meeting the requests of Mediterranean countries, the Leonardo project PAWS (Pedagogic Work in the Forest – A Seminar Concept for Foresters) was followed by a Leonardo Transfer of Innovation project called PAWSMED. PAWSMED is especially directed towards Mediterranean countries and has been adapted to their needs. For this goal, partners from Italy, Slovenia, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Austria, and Germany worked in the project.
All in all, the PAWS material is now available in 10 languages and be used in 11 countries of the EU
In a context of increased urbanization of society, of climate and environmental change and in a context of globalisation and a growing relevance of forests there is a ever but greater need for a sound comprehension of the multiple dimensions of forest and forestry. Forest pedagogics or “Waldpädagogik” is a priority area for developing a shared comprehension of forests and their role in helping to solve the enormous challenges we are currently facing.
However, most foresters of Mediterranean countries either have a limited education in the pedagogical area or none at all.
Therefore the products the former Leonardo project PAWS developed have been transfered and adapted to the needs of the Mediterranean countries. Furthermore multipliers and foresters were trained in the use of the whole PAWS-MED concept.
During the running time of the project we had different work items such as:
a) Development of additional material for Mediterranean countries. Topics like illegal fires, desertification and climate change should be written and included in the already existing material of the former project
b) Integration/translation: The mentioned topics, additions and comment were included and all the material translated into IT, GR, ES, PT, SL, EN, DE •
The materials are including the following products:
Course framework The course framework is the foundation / base for the whole PAWS-MED concept. It is a guide for trainers who want to teach forest paedagogy
The workbook is designed to give background information in particular
regarding paedagogical issues which might be important to know before dealing with the public and before creating a tour for special target groups through the forest
creating a tour
curriculum (seminar concept) The curriculum (seminar concept) gives detailed information about the structure of the course (training for foresters) and the chronological sequence.
The tour planner is a tool which enables foresters to plan a tour related to
a certain target group (e.g. preschool, adults, seniors, people with special
needs), time of the day, time schedule, season, landscape, messages to be
manual - PAWS MED The manual goes with the tourplanner and describes on how to proceed and to use the tourplanner. It has been translated and relevant screenshots have been made
c) Training and implementation: After the translation disseminators / so called multipliers coming from Italy, Slovenia, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Greece were trained in the use and implementation of the PAWS/PAWS-MED concept. The training took place in Austria, Gmunden and was led by the Austrian partner, who is very experienced in the topic “Waldpädagogik”. Afterwards the multipliers were training foresters in the PAWS/PAWS-MED concept in their own countries and the trained foresters were organising tours for different groups e.g. preschool children, seniors, people with special needs. During the running time of the project 15 multipliers and 141 foresters were trained in the use of the PAWS/PAWS-MED concept.
For the year 2012 all med. Partners are planning additional trainings, not only for foresters, but some want also to include teachers and even journalists. But new trainings are not the only activities. E.g. the Cypriot partner is in contact with the Ministry of Education for preparing a training program for teachers and planning to join the FCN subgroup Forest pedagogy for the development of a common European FP-strategy. And due to the success of PAWS-MED Slovenia will establish a core group of forest pedagogues.
During our very successful final conference held in Sabaudia. further interest in the PAWS-MED concept and training was e.g. coming from Libanon and Argentina. First discussion regarding this matter were held with the group Silvia mediterranea
All in all we had 6 Partnermeeting.
