Title The Missing Link, increasing social inclusion by engaging experts by experience
Project Number 2009 - LDV - TOI - 507
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Marketing Text Experts by experience play nowadays an important role in facilitating participation in society for all kind of groups who are excluded. In various countries there are already training programs for these experts and they are working in a variety of paid and unpaid jobs in a professional way. This project has the objective to improve the training programs and the employment.
The concept of the methodology experts by experience (EE’s) in social exclusion originated as a response to the missing link between on the one hand the policy makers or the aid providers of all services with which the excluded persons are confronted, and the excluded persons themselves on the other hand. This missing link is partly responsible for the fact that exclusion persists.
People who are social excluded have experience in exclusion. But to have the capacity to apply their experiences they need training to acquire the necessary insights, attitudes and skills to be able to work as an expert by experience in the functions required.
Excluded people are a risk group which has no education, which is stigmatised and which is separated from the rest of society on all domains of life by a deep gap. All these things lead to unemployment and lack of employability. EE’s have undiscovered (informal learnt) experienced knowledge about exclusion and inclusion processes. EE’s can help to bridge the gap between aid providers and policy makers on the one side and excluded people on the other.
The main aims of this project ‘The Missing Link’ are: to develop tools to improve the personal development, training programs, the employability and the practise of the EE’s; to improve social services and increase social inclusion; to create opportunities for innovative practice of collaboration of professional trained staff and experts by experience; to make a contribution to a society with a general well being for everyone.
In the consortium every partner is national and international recognised as expert in this field. There is a wide and diverse range of experiences in working on exclusion in different areas: poverty, migrants, drugs and mental health problems. The partnership covers different regions in Europe: East, West, North and South. We have different activities in the terms of the project: research, training, practice, developing theories, creating training and jobs. We develop a theoretical and practical foundation that give us a guaranty to bring the project into practice and to develop European strategies to increase EE involvement in different fields of social and health issues.
Our outcomes are: training programs for EE’s, train the trainer programs, job coaching strategies and programs, evaluation tools of personal development, methodology to address employers and to introduce an organisational development towards employment of EE’s, research about the effects of the employment of EE’s on social inclusion.
The impact will be: improve EE’s involvement in partner countries and in Europe by innovative training programs, improvement of social and health services and inclusion strategies, raise the awareness of the value of experienced knowledge. This can works anti-stigma.

1. We’ll make a description of the definition of the Experts by Experience and social inclusion, the training programs, the job profile, and the places where they are employed, their level and their position in the workplaces. It will be a description of the highest common factor of all the partners’ projects.
2. We’ll develop “train the trainer” programs for the experts by experience (EE), the experts by training and for the tandems. We’ll develop an instrument to stimulate the reflection of the tandem on the effects of their interventions on the growth of the excluded persons. We’ll create a personal evaluation instrument for the students, so that they have the possibility to follow their own growth and empowerment. We‘ll share experiences between trainees and tandems. Therefore we’ll develop exchange programs between partners.
3. We’ll create a methodology to address employers. We’ll seek and describe the organizational preconditions and the necessary organizational changes for the employment of the EE’s. We’ll create coaching programs on the job for the EE’s in the scope of HRM.
4. We’ll develop special research instruments for describing results for the evaluation of the training program, of the coaching and of the effects on social inclusion. We’ll describe the foundation of this approach and the underlying knowledge.
This Pilot project could flow into a new co-operation between a wider partnership on the level of the European institutes. So we want to create an European Support and Knowledge institution about the methodology of experts by experience.
