Summary REAL Skills Europe (Refrigerant Emissions And Leakage Skills for Europe) is a voluntary awareness, information and training initiative that provides a vehicle for individuals and organisations in EU member states to share and disseminate technical information and best practice in refrigerant containment.
Description The project has built on the achievements of the 2009 UK REAL Zero project (Refrigerant Emissions And Leakage Zero) to achieve reductions in refrigerant leakage through improved awareness, education and training. The project consortium comprises educational institutions, teaching, membership and research organisations, which perform leading roles in their own countries in training and supporting RAC professionals, from the UK, Belgium, Greece, Germany, Poland, Estonia and France. The project commenced in October 2009 and was completed in September 2011, with public release of the key project outputs taking place between July and September 2011. Since October 2011 the REAL Skills Europe website and e-learning training scheme have been underwritten by the project partners, with a medium term objective of making the continuing project self funding via revenues from training registrations.

The products available as outputs of the RSE projects are split into two categories:
1. The REAL Skills Europe Toolset.
This comprises several Guidance Notes, a training guide and software tool that are available as free downloads from the RSE website at http://www.realskillseurope.eu/real-skills-europe-toolbox. Users are required to register and provide an e-mail address in order to download the items. The items available for download are:

2. E-learning Leakage Reduction Training Scheme
The e-learning training scheme is intended to align with the general RAC Vocational and Educational Training (VET) framework of the EU partner countries and new EU Standard EN 13313:2010 (Refrigerating systems and heat pumps - competence of personnel). The scheme complements and buiilds on the mandatory F-Gas training and certification (EC 303/2008).
The training is aimed at refrigeration technicians, craftsmen, engineers and technical specialists who have practical on site experience of commercial and/ or industrial RAC systems and who would benefit from a more thorough understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of proactive leak reduction than is covered within the EU and nationally accredited F-Gas and ODS refrigerant handling training schemes. However, the course could be of value to anyone working in RAC system design and manufacture, installation and commissioning, maintenance and repair, training, consultancy (e.g. services such as efficiency advice, drawing up specifications, managing tendering processes), environmental management and carbon assessment. RAC system owners, operators and building facilities managers can also benefit from undertaking study of certain elements of the course in order to gain a better appreciation of the environmental and financial impact of refrigerant leakage and implementing a leakage reduction strategy.
The e-learning has been designed so that it can be studied entirely online at a pace determined by the student, or combined with classroom teaching and practical sessions. It comprises 4 modules:
1. Environmental, cost and legal aspects of refrigerant leakage
2. Reducing leakage through appropriate maintenance and service
3. Minimising leakage – good practice for design, installation and commissioning
4. Reducing leakage through site specific surveys and advice
