The aim of the project "Training of Protected Area Staff" (TOPAS) is to develop standards for the continuing training of staff in European protected areas. Training institutions, which will carry out future programmes, and staff will be given ideas and training materials which will enable them to gain further qualifications at a high current standard.
Module-based materials for in-service training will be selected or written by the Technical Board, piloted by partners in protected areas, evaluated and offered to employees as well as the European protected area organisations. Through the development of quality standards for Europe the level of care of protected areas will be raised to the level of international standards. Information about the project and its partners, discussion processes within the Technical Board, as well as progress in the development of modules, together with further relevant information, will be made available on the Internet. Discussion groups on the website will initiate a broad discussion as early as the development stage of modules and enable the participation of international partner and supporter organisations.
Through publication and dissemination of the results it is expected that discussion and further development within specialist circles will be facilitated, which in turn will help to expand the development of networks
In the long term the aim is to create a European certificate for staff in protected areas.
