Title ProGuide2 Further United Development of Key Professions for Visually Impaired Persons
Project Number 2008-1-SE1-LEO05-00409
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
Marketing Text ProGuide2 is about adaptations of work places and training facilities for visually impaired sound engineers, musicians and producers. It has resulted in two adapted general solutions for editing and processing sound in a professional digital environment; two adapted editors for processing and editing sounds in keyboards, synthesizers and effect devices; a hard and software package for making scores available for easy reading for visually impaired musicians and controllable in a new way with an innovative interface. The project has pointed out useful methods for communication between employers and employees, educators and students, authorities and users in order to define the needed resources for establishing new steady jobs for the visually impaired.
Further united development of key professions for visually impaired persons within the Proguide2
The word Proguide2 represents the second professional guide to accessible technical solutions, and useful information, for the target groups within the branch for visually impaired. The Proguide 2 project is highly a project with a lot of transfer of earlier received technical innovations, on some key techniques for visually impaired sound engineers, musicians and producers. The project has addressed many urgent problems for these 3 key professions. The overall biggest aim was to combine the technical ideas, with knowledge of how to be able to establish and keep a large number of steady jobs for the group visually impaired in these key professions all over EU. Our goal was also to establish fundamental improvements for proper education, and in the process of lifelong learning for the target professions.
The impact of the project has a label of carrying the technical ideas through serious discussions and gathering the concrete plans for improving the possibilities for the target groups. Our partnership represents top craft educators, companies in the branch of technical aids for visually impaired people, authorities, and interest organisations.
All the members in the partnership have a long international background, in participation in various international projects and discussions. The group has taken a interdisciplinary aproach to the questions, which lead to better possibilities for the visually impaired end users. The goals for the project was defined as:
transferring earlier received technical experiences into several concrete products. 2 adapted general solutions for editing and processing sound in a professional environment, 2 adapted editors for processing and editing sounds in keyboards, synthesizers, and effect devices. A hard and software package for making scores available for easy reading for visually impaired musicians. Then controllable in a new way with an alternative innovative interface.
Our experiences from developing new and innovative techniques for building complex Braille and speech oriented interfaces in the previous project Proguide, have been used and transferred into new and concrete solutions. Brochures and presentation materials for various types of presentations for different audiences have been produced. 20 workshops for covering different aspects and impacts of the professions have been arranged. Further development of the Proguide web page has taken place.
A significant valorisation part with participation in well-known and visited trade shows and conferences has also been included in the project. The Proguide2 project has actively worked for harmonising the possibilities of the visually impaired persons in these key professions, in various countries inside EU. In that perspective the project has demonstrated properly working solutions for these professions, to be able to brake down barriers of bad attitudes. Our work will definitely show good and well working alternatives, which can help in that perspective even after the project is over.
This Project will address different needs of the visually impaired sound engineers, musicians and producers. The fundamental reason for this project is to reduce the number of unfair situations for these target groups in order to be able to have proper education, steady job and opportunity to participate in a life-long learning process. A lot of international organisations for visually impaired have pointed to the problem that there are different circumstances in different EU countries for these target groups. They have pointed out that some EU countries do the rehabilitation plans for each individual but do not provide them with proper equipment in order to have a steady job. The reason for this unfair situation is the lack of money in the social sector in some of the EU countries. Some other EU countries are seeking for new job opportunities for the visually impaired people. They want to have a possibility to dedicate resources for doing investigations inside their countries to identify possible new work places. This can be the fact with these three professions within this project. There are many indicators in the general development of the society and the services for the visually impaired persons, which can have a significant help of this project. In economic terms if one visually impaired person gets a job the society saves between 300 and 500 thousand Euros in 5 years time. That is due to the fact is the individual becomes a tax payer, his consumption of health services goes down and he or she participates also in general development of the society. There are several academic researches done during the last 10 years time which confirm this indicator. Still the unemployment is between 30% and 70% for the group visually impaired in various countries within the EU. Swedish Association for the visually impaired is one of the organisations involved in this type of the research. Another indicator is that the definition of the accessibility service in the EU will have a remarkable use of this type of project. Technical interfaces, material for services for the visually impaired and processes for receiving proper education, getting job and having continuous development at one’s work place will be covered in this project. The inclusion of accessibility for all citizens inside the EU is a very highly prioritised question, which needs all the possible help to be solved properly. This project is an answer to that in this respect. The third important indicator is to establish efficient dialogue between all possible interest groups in this area. The project will point out useful methods for communication between the employer and employee, educators and students, authorities and users in order to define the needed resources for establishing new steady jobs. The conclusion from our point of view is that the project can do something very useful for the visually impaired in the member countries of the EU.
The previous project ProGuide has established a lot of the fundamental processes, which are needed for a successful result for these target groups. In this defined project we have a good chance to transfer innovations into a large number of useful realistic processes in order to achieve our described expected results. ProGuide will refine* the results from its predecessor to concrete and useful processes, which will lead to better possibilities for the target groups. The goal is to establish sustainable solutions in all aspects of this project.
This project will definitely work with the fact that we need to solve the problem with various solutions. We need to make all the processes more efficient for getting good education, steady job and continuous training for one to be able to keep the job. The project will also work with the process of making more cost effective solutions for the compensational technical aids. The third thing is that the project will also inform all the community about the good possibilities, which are possible to find with a proper solution for education, technical aids and good processes in finding jobs. Our opinion is that a great number of good examples of successful solutions for visually impaired can break the barriers in order to change attitudes. We think that this process will lead to a very good chance for the significant number of visually impaired people to be able to participate in the working life.
Within the framework of the ProGuide2 we would like to raise a number of issues, which will help us find long-term and effective solutions for the target groups.
In the framework of this project we would like to turn to the target group comprising visually impaired sound technicians, musicians and producers. We will also address the whole branch including authorities, educators, companies specialising in technical aids that work in touch with those target groups. Within the previous project ProGuide we had an opportunity to work together in an interdisciplinary group, which could do a very important work for the target group visually impaired. We have become a group of educators, companies, associations and authorities tightly knitted together and representing different countries, which was able to address problems together, which is and will be able to achieve a concrete and positive result to be enjoyed by the visually impaired.
In a short-term perspective we expect to have a raising interest for these possible professions. With the help of various parts of this project we would like to establish a solid cooperation with all external interests. With the help of the expected results of this project we hope to be able to focus on harmonising prerequisites for the group visually impaired sound engineers, musicians and producers in all the EU countries. In the long term perspective we expect to see growing numbers of employed visually impaired in these key professions. We see also that the establishment of the processes for getting proper education, good technical assistance etc. will lead to a continuing growing interest for these target professions.
The impact of the project can be described as the whole branch of the visually impaired persons. The possible employees and all authorities on national and European level, which are included.
