Title An Educational Platform for Physically Disabled People in Designing/Manufacturing/Mainteneance of Supporting Equipment
Project Number LLP-LdV-TOI-2007-TR-064
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
The Project has received a wide spread public attention. It has generated optimistic expectation on disabled people and their relatives in terms of possible employment opportunities. It has also created a positive synergy over the related medical sectors and stakeholders (design, manufacture, supply, maintenance, social security institution etc.) which are currently in less developed position. A new awareness atmosphere has been generated for the local administrative authorities (municipality) to take into account; as a result some architectural improvements have been realized in the city for improving the accessibility of disabled people. According to a survey carried out on disabled people, it has been observed that a great deal of increase in the self-confidence of disabled people has been achieved. Especially in medical sectors, high expectations towards employing qualified-trained disabled people have been stimulated.
With a newly developed software to be used for selecting the most suitable “wheelchair” for a given disabled person, the consensus of all related parties such as doctors, equipment suppliers, social security departments and users will be realised in selection process, on the basis of known facts, regulations, the extent of disability, available technology that are included in the software.
The software has been designed to help all the related professionals (doctors, rehabilitation experts/engineers, elderly/disabled, companies that design/manufacture/test such equipment, government institution) make the most effective, correct and speedy decision in the selection of supporting equipment (Wheelchair).
This software will provide the disabled with the following advantages;
Reduced rehabilitation period
Make the daily activities easier and more effective
Improper/incorrect selection of supporting equipment that would cause accidents, injuries, discomfort etc will be prevented
Reduce the work load/intensity of hospitals and rehabilitation centres
Provide substantial economic savings
Summary The main objective of the project is to establish an educational platform which provides theoretical and practical training for physically disabled people in designing/manufacturing/testing/selecting repairing of supporting equipment such as wheelchair, prosthesis, elevators, etc.
Description The concept is an open source of knowledge available to all European citizens via internet and this knowledge can be available in hard copies too. They will be distributed all over the union in a request. This project aims at establishing an education and training platform for disabled people in participating European countries. Through this education and training, the disabled people will directly take part in designing/manufacturing/ testing/selecting/maintenance processes of supporting equipment to be used by other people like themselves. By enabling the direct contribution of disabled people to all stages of these processes, a unique example and innovative model for all other European countries will be introduced. This will increase not only the rate of using such equipment, but also their functionality, reliability and quality. As a result, handicapped people will have a relatively better quality of life and employment opportunities in Europe with the skills they acquire. With the know-how, experience and knowledge gained through the participation of disabled people, equipment manufacturers and designers for disabled people of European countries will have a competitive advantage over the rest of the world.
