Title CELiNE - Content Embedded Literacy Education in New Economy
Project Number LLP-LdV TOI 2007 RO 012
Project Type Transfer of Innovation
The main concept of projectis the developing of literacy skills, necessary not only for vocational training, but also for social and family life. The main advantage of the project is that it aims to embed literacy training in regular vocational training.
So far in the project, we identified core competencies in literacy that facilitates learning (including metalearning skills) that assures an optimum participation to workplace activities. Also, we identified the main literacy needs of VET trainees. Based on this finding we designed a training curriculum and training program for VET teachers and a booklet of activities. Hopefully, this project’s products will facilitate the acquisition of new literacy skills for trainees which will reflect in enhanced opportunities of employment in European Labour Market.
The sound pedagogical approaches and the transferred innovation led to a new, quality embedded literacy program and a large option for embedded literacy activities.
The products designed were conceived to be relevant for vocational training. They develop general literacy and numeracy skills, including skills necessary in working in a foreign language work environment. Following a training for embedded literacy for the New Economy will facilitate the trainees mobility opportunities.
Summary CELiNE is a project that aims to challenge and change the underlying philosophies, implicit assumptions and ‘common vision’ behind vocational and technical education, which should be understood as more than strictly technical education. This will contribute towards supporting personal development, employability and participation in the European Labour Market. The project envisages to implement change and to bring together the technical and literacy dimensions of the new economy’ workplace through content integrated literacy learning.
The most important objectives of the CELiNE project are:
To define and explore the learning needs of VET teachers and trainers in what workplace literacy education is concerned
To support the VET teachers and trainers in training activities in the acquisition and the use of knowledge, skills to facilitate personal development, employability and participation in the European labour market
To identify new skills and competencies for Vet teachers and trainers that are essential in the life long learning context: work based learning methodologies and Content Embedded Literacy Learning
To develop tools and practices to support continuous adaptation of education and training curricula for VET trainers and teachers in order for them to meet the needs of their trainees/pupils who will have to take new roles and to face new job requirements in companies that performe in the ‘new economy’
At a very practical level, the main objectives of the project are to be achieved through the identification of the learning needs of VET teachers and trainers in what workplace literacy teaching is concerned and through the design of a training curriculum and training materials that can help these teachers acquire the new skills and competences they need in order to embed workplace literacy education into vocational and technical content teaching. The training curriculum and the training materials to be designed and written during the project will help the teachers be aware of the literacy practices their pupils/tranees need in the workplace, will support the teachers in approaching the teaching/learning sequences and materials as based both on the specialised technical content and on their literacy potential and dimension.
New tools and practices are needed in VET teacher training and in teaching vocational content in order to embed workplace literacy education into technical content, in view of the new roles and job requirements in companies in the ‘new economy’.
