Summary The project transferred innovation, shared learning and practical experience to integrate the programme within the Educational training systems within each member state. The project was aimed to develop a transferable model to reduce business failure through lack of skills transfer at succession. The project also created a framework for retention of older workers in new roles to share experience.
The UK Government published a report entitled ‘Passing the Baton’ [dti 2002] that stated “100,000 Businesses fail each year due to lack of Business Success Planning”. Although SME Businesses throughout the European Union may currently be successful under their present leadership, many risk failure in the medium term due to their lack of skills and competencies transfer for business succession. The programme was aimed to reduce economic inactivity levels for people over 50 years of age by transforming their role for direct delivery of output to active mentoring and assistance with applied learning. Major emphasis was placed on the need to create new business throughout the European Union, because there had been a hole in the business bucket through which thousands of jobs were lost due to lack of succession skills transfer. The point of business succession was also a vital opportunity not only to transfer skills but to spur entrepreneurship to improve the competitiveness and wealth creating capacity of SME within the European Union economy. The aim of the project was to transfer best practice & experience gained in Wales through 2 European Funded projects: TRANSFER® Business Succession Planning and SKILLMATCH – Re-engaging people who are 50+ into the world of work. The project transferred innovation, share learning and practical experience to integrate the programme within the Educational training systems within each member state. The project partners represented all the vital stakeholders essential to the evaluation and implementation of the pilot programme within member states.
