What is an Incubation Manager?
From the idea to market success it is a process. The incubation manager is a process-coach supporting existing SMEs and nascent SMEs (Entrepreneurs) in this process. Experienced Incubation Managers use tools (toolbox) in this accompanying process.
“Incubation Manager” as a new European job profile with a Skills Set, modular learning materials with blended learning (face to face courses and/or web-based EU-wide learning material on www.ecqa.org , browse professions, Incubation Manager). Main aim of this course is to learn and use tools for enterprise/startup-analysis, for strategy and for the innovation process (IMT Innovation Management Tools).
The “Incubation Manager” Course is based on EQF – European Qualification Framework and certified by ECQA – European Certification and Qualification Association.

The Austrian Incubation Manager Course is a further development of BUNT (Business Development Using New technologies) / MINT (Managing the Integration of New Technologies) – Programme. The main aim of this project was to adapt the existing “Incubation Manager “–Course of the Association of Austrian Technology Centres for Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia (special needs and regional situation of their SMEs). Then the adapted content will be translated in English and the 3 languages. Additionally the content of the course (in English) will be structured according to the guidelines of ECQA (Skills Set, modular learning units and published on a web-based eLearning platform (access via www.ecqa.org ). There is also a possibility of online self-assessment and online-examination. This project will give the possibility of EU-wide higher qualification and certification for the new Job Role “Incubation Manager”.
Partner in HU, SK and CZ train other consultants (multiplier-effect) and use the tools in the work with SME and incubees.
Training content in detail:
The 7 training modules (skill units) and their educational objectives:
Module 1: Introduction and overview
To sensitise the participants to innovation / necessity of innovation for SME / incubees
Module 2: Strategy in general
To know and learn how to use the strategic tools and the connections between them; advantages and disadvantages (occasional pitfalls) of the tools; basic and necessary content of a business plan; to show the influence and importance of strategy in combination with the company culture especially for innovative incubees; to check, if the company/incubee is able to fulfil the requirements of the planned innovation; present chances and risks of the ideas and in future
Module 3: Innovation in general
To get idea what are the basics of innovation(-strategy); how to control successfully the process of innovation in general, not to fail and develop ideas not according to the demands of the customers; and also how to reduce the financial (personal) risks due to delays in the time to market (TTM)
Module 4: Searching / Finding innovations
To learn and train the usual used tools to find ideas; how to create an invention-team; prerequisites of the management to be inventive; what target-group has the invention / innovation in the market and how to present the benefit in the right (psychological) way; the main contents of a product; does the company/incubee fit to the innovation and vice versa?
Module 5: Evaluating / Selecting innovations
To learn to handle different tools to evaluate an invention / innovation and the connection between the time to market (TTM) and amortisation of an innovation/ invention; how to prioritise ideas; Innovation-SWOT; risk-management for innovations; different tools, each for a specific view on the ideas to increase the probability of success for the company/incubee
Module 6a: Implementation
To learn how to find the target-groups, to launch the products in the market in the optimal, right way; considering the competition; the technology-positioning; bionic rules and especially the customer benefits of the target groups – in combination with project-management (simple solution) and project- and strategy-controlling
Module 6b: Controlling
To accompany incubees during the hard (commercial) time from the invention to an innovation; to secure the market-entrance and show them how much financial liquidity they need to survive; based on the technology-orientated education of incubees there is a great lack in business-know-how
Module 7: How to use the software-tools
Repetition of the content of all chapters in combination with the tools the handed over to the participants , the “over all check” – to interpret the key-points; the sense, necessity and background of co-operations; scenario-techniques; SWOT; combination of product/market – portfolio; market/technology-portfolio
