Marketing Text Since 2006 the Oberstufenzentrum Bürowirtschaft und Verwaltung (College of Business and Public Administration) in Berlin has been sending trainees in the field of office communication for work placements to companies in different countries of the European Union and Turkey, funded by the EU programme Leonardo Da Vinci mobility. A 2 to 3-months internship abroad is part of their 3-years vocational traineeship either in the dual system or in the in-door training at school. In 2007 a group of trainees for media and information services took part in the programme for the first time.Before the trainees go abroad, they have to attend a special work-based language course with emphasis on cultural and regional aspects of the host countries as well as individual preparations. The objectives (skills and competences) of the placements are part of the trainees' contracts. together with the coordinators and the host organisations monitoring and mentoring of each paricipant is arranged in order to make the placement a success.
The growing internationalization of the markets, especially of the European market, has impact on the vocational training. In future there will be a need of qualified employees with international professional skills, language skills and cross cultural understanding.
The College of business and Public Administration has taken up this challenge in order to improve vocational training on the background of future demands of the European labour market.
The objectives of our school are: to support young people in gaining foreign language competence and intercultural knowledge to initiate individual learning processes for the development of their personalities, their social and international professional skills.
Target group 1: 16 trainees for office communications clerks in the dual system with qualification in Business English,
target group 2: 7 trainees for office communications clerks in the in-door training with qualification in Business Polish and Turkish,
target group 3: 6 trainees for media and information services in the dual system.
The results of the evaluation show clearly, that all participants were able to cope with the demands of their work placements abroad. The students did improve their technical language skills in communication with their colleagues at the work-places. Depending on the sections they worked for, they had the opportunity to gain specialized technical knowledge.
The internships abroad have a lasting effect on the personal development of the students and their social competences such as self-confidence, adaptabiltity, team spririt, tolerance and willingness to compromise.All in all their attitude towards education in general and the need of intercultural learning has positively changes. All participants in the programme were awarded the Europass mobility as certificate of their traineeship abroad.
