Summary By means of this project 6 pupils of the Higher vocational school for tourism in Retz are able to attain the interculutural competences that are absolutely necessary in tourism. They can acquire these competences and practise what they have already learned theoretically by working in French restaurants and hotels. This experience concerns French guests, but also foreign guests in Austria in general. The experience will help the pupils to learn about customs in French gastronomy and they will get to know the French cuisine. They will also get to know the stucture and organisation of a French hotel and they will enlarge their knowledge of the French language. Their stay will help them to learn about the diversity of the European culture and motivate them to learn other languages and it will help them to get on in their professional career in general. Touristic education must convey intercultural competence and this competence has to be put into practice in order to acquire it. Our six pupils will work in French hotels and restaurants in the French Alps for 4 weeks in July and August 2007 (Les Houches, Les Gets, Chasse sur Rhône) and by special tasks they will learn about cultural differences and they will pass on their knowledge to their classmates afterwards. They will also get to know a part of another European country and they will meet the pupils and teachers of our partner school in Saint-Chamond whose pupils have already stayed at our school. The model of the 6 Austrian pupils will be an incentive for others to do their work experience abroad in the following years. The vision of our school, the intercultural aspect, which is a result of the location of our school at the border to the Czech Republic, will get another special note through this project.
