Summary Sending organisation of the project is the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, the host organisations are six libraries in foreign countries. The objective is to provide the Specialists in Media and Information Services (FAMI) who are trained in the library of the BAM with the opportunity to experience the library systems of other European countries via internships of four to eight weeks. The apprentices are supposed to identify resemblances and differences regarding the German library system and recognize those aspects of the host country’s system that are exemplary, in accordance to a best practice approach. After their return, the apprentices can implement their conclusions and thus pass on experiences to the library of the BAM and to their employers after the vocational training. The host organisations benefit from the interns as well, since they obtain the opportunity for an interchange with German librarians. Besides getting to know a foreign library code of practice, the project has further positive aspects for the beneficiaries. On the one hand, a foreign country is experienced as a workplace, so that a later career outside of Germany is recognised as a real possibility, which will increase their mobility within Europe. On the other hand, the measure enhances language abilities and intercultural social competence, important skills in the library field, which is geared clearly towards communication. A total of six apprentices will participate, two per year, so that the whole funding period is used (1 June 2006 to 31 May 2008).
