Summary The retraining of library and information professionals to meet the challenge of the modern information society is the main task of this project. Libraries are particularly well placed to disseminate information literacy skills at local level because of their existing network and organisation. Library professionals, who can play a vital role in providing public access to Information and Communication Technology tools, therefore need new skills Acquisition of the necessary IT skills through traditional classroom teaching does not allow for the scope and speed required by the profession in the present climate of increasing public demand for information and services. The project will adapt a course already developed by a Danish library, made up of three modules ( ‘basic Internet’, ‘advanced Internet’ and ‘webpage design’) to provide a distance learning programme for Lithuania and Latvia. This package will form an integral part of the continuous training for librarians in those countries. Information on the project will be disseminated by the partnership, through seminars for the academic and library community and presentations for continuous education courses and professional associations.
