Summary The aim of this project is to update teaching programmes in biomedical physics, with special emphasis on new diagnostic methods. Rapid changes in medical technology and healthcare have left vocational training, especially in medical and nursing colleges, unable to provide students with up-to-date skills to meet the needs of hospitals and clinics. The project will develop, test and evaluate training modules and materials to meet this challenge. Specially designed modules will ensure that all levels of training are relevant to the operation of new medical devices, especially lasers and fibre-optics technology. These training materials will be prepared for traditional and for open and distance learning before being evaluated by external advisors and by the medical professionals who piloted them. Co-operation between medical schools in Latvia, Poland, Lithuania and Germany will provide for an integrated programme which will allow for the unification of teaching processes in the region. The final products, in Lithuanian and English, will be available in print and CD ROM format and on the Internet.
