Undoubtedly, you can offer more to people with disabilities when you
understand their feelings and their needs. SEAD focuses on increasing the
empathy of persons working in the social field and on the understanding of
the feelings, needs and the psychological and emotional situation of people
with disabilities. With SEAD, a person who works and interact with people
with disabilities has the chance not only to gain knowledge and information
about the disability but also to feel the disability.
Common methods for self experience, like using a wheelchair for a certain
time, or shopping with blindfold eyes, simulating blindness, painting with
mouth or toes, etc are already used. From our point of view, these methods
focus on a single disability and on the practical difficulties that the

Project SEAD (Self Experience And Disability) provides a blended learning
through training courses which intends to increase the empathy using self
experience and to give tools to professionals in the social area, based on

good “platform” for the holistic simulation of disability.
Furthermore Dance/Music is used as a tool in our project that uses
expressive movement and music as a process of creative personal development
and social integration and can be used in a rehabilitation context. It sets
at the centre of the own interest the psycho-somatic unity of the
individual, where sound and movement are tools for communication.
Finally, the last tool we use in our project is Textile Work. Textile work
can be a therapy for young as well as for older adults and it increases the
ability of people with disabilities to concentrate, to work independently
and to rise the motivation. By developing continuous simple work, it
increases self-esteem, autonomy and cooperation and may create cultural
Moreover, trainers who work with textile, gain more knowledge, more
qualification and better experience. As a result they are capable of
working in different fields of social work in combination with textile
