Project Type Pilot Project, project with multiplying effect (2000-2006)
SAGE - Promoting participation of the elderly
Meeting the challenge of ageing by involving elderly people into the planning and design of their living environment.
Summary The project focused on the development of a training for "participation facilitators" for social planning of the elderly. The target group of the pilot training was interested people 50+ who received a practice-oriented training to be prepared for their work.
Senior citizens have a right to be included in decision making processes that affect their
lives. Participation of senior citizens is in itself beneficial for seniors, since they can influence
processes that have an impact on their lives, but it is also advantageous for communities, as
it helps to use the resources of older people more creatively.
A facilitator is a person who stimulates a number of individuals to take part in participation
processes. This leads to democratic decision-making with a strong focus on achieving
collaboration in all kinds of social planning in communities.
The facilitator needs to be skilled in chairing team meetings and workshops, aware of
effective project management techniques and be familiar with strategic planning. He/she also
needs a good knowledge of the general aspects of ageing and the social and psychological
processes connected with it.
The SAGE training course supports these needs, by equipping participants with useful
techniques for encouraging senior citizens to participate in creating their lives and shaping
