Summary The LATE project has a dual focus, it will initially develop diagnostic tools for language audits, enabling enterprises, and particularly public authorities to identify communication needs and plan necessary language training courses for their employees. This primary development area will involve the training of personnel to become language auditors within government institutions and SMEs, to act as a pilot for language materials developed. Beyond the development of diagnostic tools, the secondary project focus will be upon the response to the language audit, in the development of an ESP (English for Special Purposes) course, focussing particularly upon the language encountered in official contacts between different European countries. The course will be developed at two levels, intermediate and advanced, and to be directed at internationally active SMEs and public authorities (regional/local government institutions). Piloting of the course is set to take place initially in Hungary where recent studies have shown that foreign markets are avoided because of language difficulties. Further pilot courses are then set to take place in Bulgaria, Greece and Poland. The outcome of the project will be both ESP Language Materials (EN, HU, BG, EL & PL) and a range of trained language auditors in each of the pilot countries. A dedicated website will be established to further inform upon project progress and to allow the download of sample ESP language materials.
