Summary Undergoing practical training in a foreign country during the course of studies in Austria improves professional chances in the European job market. More and more employers are attaching a great deal of value to experience acquired in foreign countries. For this reason, we would like to offer an opportunity to our students at the School of Nursing Innsbruck, to undergo practical training in nursing at a hospital, including intramural health institutions, in a foreign country, after they have completed their 4th module or semester (minimum age 18 years). Acquaintance with other healthcare systems and hospital structures, legal frameworks and schools, and their theoretical and practical training programmes and teaching styles can make a valuable contribution to training in their special professional area. This should promote competence in their special area and flexibility required in the nursing profession. The transcultural nursing competence of those who take advantage of this opportunity to study abroad is also increased. Moreover, students get an opportunity to improve their foreign language competence and gain an insight into other cultures, all of which have an extremely positive influence on the development of personality. Intercultural understanding will be promoted and European contacts will be established. Those who wish to take advantage of this offer will get an opportunity to undergo a practical training course abroad; the credits obtained there can be transferred and will be fully recognized in Austria (and also vice versa).
