This project is for students at the Robert- Schuman College of Vocational training attending a course to become "state-qualified commercial assistants with languages".
The entrance qualifications required for this course are either university entrance qualifications (2-year course) or higher education entrance qualifications (3-year course). The course of study combines the acquisition of language skills with a grounding in economics, thereby filling a gap in in the range of vocational training courses otherwise available. This innovative approach also requires students to complete a work placement to enable them to combine theory with practice. The goals of this training course can be especially well achieved if the work placement takes place in a foreign country. This is because the students command of the foreign language is improved, whilst at the same times social and job-related skills are stengthened. Greater mobility is a further gain.
The placement students are usually employed in the fields of administration and secretarial work by the foreign companies, thereby enabling them to make use of their theoretical knowledge under supervision (e.g. telephoning, sending faxes, computer skills). The students mainly go to countries where English, French or Spanish is spoken (UK, Ireland, France and Spain) as these languages are concentrated on in the course. Work placements abroad last four to eight weeks and all start on 1 July 2002.
